Hello all,

It's Joe Aghahowa, the owner of Red Camera #3386. This is my first post, but I've visited the forum on several different occasions and have benefited from many of the threads. Thank you.

Here's my situation: The folks who normally use my camera are going overseas for 6 months and won't be shooting on the Red during that time. They will be working primarily with the HPX 500 and the HPX 170 instead. Accordingly, beginning today, I'd like to make my camera package available as a long-term rental. Some of my accessories are already being rented by another production company, but what's remaining is up-for-grabs.

Red Camera Body #3386 w/Battery Charger, two Red Batteries, and one 8GB CF Card:

Here are the long-term rental rates for the above:

575/week......
1700/month....
3900/3 months...
7100/6 months...

These rates are decidedly lower than what rental houses and other Red owners are charging. If you are an independent producer or low-budget filmmaker with a project (or a cinematographer who regularly shoots with the Red), then this cost-saving offer might be right up your alleyway. Thank you in advance for your consideration. To inquire further, send emails to both me and my business partner (filmmaker Paul Ero), rather than a 'private message' through this forum.

My email address is: aghajoe@aol.com
Paul's email address is: osapal@aol.com

You can also call me on my cell: 310 863 5483

Inquiries from outside the U.S. are welcome...

best,

Joe Aghahowa

My Camera body have a PL mount.

Hi Jamie, I have not received your email. Again, please give me a call 310-863-5483 or email aghajoe@aol.com. Thanks

If anyone from Canada thinks this is a good deal then I would offer you a comparible option. Taking into account the hassle shipping the batteries would be. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Red rentals

Red rentals

I am sure you mean well. But how is someone suppose to rent a camera when you have no back up camera if their is a problem. Cutting the costs of the camera is not only going to hurt you but everyone else who owns Reds.
I have no problem with you renting you camera. But you need at least 2 or three to get into this market.
Lowering the price and not including enough gear for 1 full day does not work either.
2 batteries is not enough for any project.
1 8 gig card. ok great for the first 20 mins of a day.

Sean is right. its not a good deal.

7100 for 6 months..

While I think that these rates are TOO LOW, I disagree that you need 2 or 3 cameras to get into the rental business. Some large rental houses only have 1 RED. Some people don't need batteries, they just shoot plugged in. I hate watching the battery meter tick away before my eyes, I try to shoot plugged in if at all possible. Further, I think that anyone renting at these rates fully understands that "the discount comes at a price". Whoever rents this package will probably have to splurge and buy a couple batteries directly from RED, or a monitor, or a drive. But who cares, for the discount that he's offering, I could buy 2 of every accessory and still be cheaper than going to a $1200/day rental house.

And I'm going to say it again, I think these rates are TOO LOW and I hope he takes this post down, as I believe he is hurting both the regular renters and himself. The moment that camera needs to go in for repair, he will lose any profit, and probably more. I heard of some poor guy having to pay RED $4000 for a replacement circuit board. He'd have to rent this camera for like 4 months just to break even if that were to happen.

Please be realistic and take this post down before somebody gets screwed.

For what you are offering (No monitoring, lack of media options, lack of power) I suppose there may be a renter out there that this appeals to. Maybe they need a backup camera for a shoot and at that rate, it's a good insurance policy. Maybe another production will be willing to deal with the shortcomings of the package and supplement their own monitoring, and use AC power some of the time.

If this was a full RED package going out for those rates it would be a bit disrespectful to the community at large, including owner/operators, rental companies, etc. But I don't see this as even close to a full package, so no worries there.

Agreed with Steve mostly.

But, even if this was a full package, if this guy wants to rent at a low price then it's his decision. He never signed a contract agreeing to never rent at a low price, and it's not like a single owner is going to put a dent in the worldwide equipment rental business.

I personally think the prices some rental houses (not all) charge are rediculous.

I'm sure whoever rents this package is either planning to use as a back up, a second camera, or is aware of it's short comings and is renting other equipment or owns eveything needed to make it a complete solution.

Personally I'm interested In turning my single camera production into a two camera production, nothing more.

I agree that everyone is entitled to rent at whatever rates they want to. And for certain types of projects, a cheap package that doesn't have lots of bells and whistles works great and everyone is happy. Where things become more difficult is when you get onto shoots where those "bells and whistles" are actually really important in integrating the camera in an environment where there are certain expectations of the gear. You need Gadget X to be able to connect to industry standard equipment, you need cable Y to feed timecode to sound, you need blah, blah, blah.....

Now, if you can have the complete package and be able to afford to rent it out for very low rates, then by all means do what suits you best. I'm certainly not one for judging people and their business practices. I have no place in doing so. I'm just trying to speak from experience that there are certain pieces of gear that I have found essential to completing a RED package and that after the investment in doing so, I wouldn't be able to put the camera out there at rock bottom prices. That's just me. Again, the original poster is not offering a complete package, so his prices don't seem that out of line.

I completely agree with you Steve.

So long as people understand exactly what they are getting, and that this is by no means a cheap solution for someone looking for an entire fully functioning package, then what Joe is doing is fine.

as a rental shop owner...

as a rental shop owner...

Where did the majority of RED Camera owners get the cash to buy these rigs?

I'm a rental shop owner with over a half million worth of gear and a cinematographer whose last film competed against the hurt locker in the main competition at their premiere at the Vencie FF.

So i'm not completely an idiot. Mostly an idiot though...e.g. i mean i like big budget action flicks over art films and still don't think i'm an accomplished lighting expert.

But i'm baffled where everyone got the money to buy these rigs? When i shot 35mm i only knew a dozen DP's in NYC that had complete 35mm camera packages.

FINALLY, i rarely get calls at my shop for the RED ONE. We usually refer clients to a RED owner/operator but I posted this for one reason really - to agree with others on this thread that you HAVE to provide a backup body and complete accessories...it's not fair to the client and to the DP who is using the package. If your RED camera work has dried up then sell it and buy a the new AF-100 coming out in December and buy back in when the EPIC becomes available.

I'm not taking potshots...i'm being sincere...i sell cameras all the time that aren't earning their keep at my shop. But like someone else said, it's a free country so do what you will...i merely wanted to offer another point of view.

Happy shooting!

Hey.....free market...everyone is a big boy and if you are on a low budget indie and scooping up gear...great, you might be able to afford taking a chance with a cam going down. There's a market for everything. I disagree you have to have multiple cameras. I personally do for my own work when i hire myself out. But i never started that way. I'm sure many of you didn't star that way--Two Sony 950's Two phantoms....etc....Andy yes, if you loose a video board--Like i did last year....that's $4,500usd So let the market work itself out. Things always do....as a friend once said to me who builds rebreathers. "I keep making them more dummy proof every year; but, the dummies keep getting made at the same pace"--that is not directed towards the OP...more of a saying that if it was not meant to be in the camera market, well then it will work itself out like everything. Or....maybe it's a great deal and he's doing better than you think.
But who cares. his camera, his money and he has to deal with what it takes to rent it out and deal with a renter etc.....
