Hi Guys

I have just completed editing a music video that was shot on RED build 20 at mostly 3K with some slomo at 2K. The DIT on the day transcoded the r3d files to Apple Pro Res (SQ) 1024 x 576 for me to do my offline with. I edited in FCP 6.06. Now I want to grade at the highest resolution i can for a good image. Where my problem lies is that I do not know how to conform my pics so that i dont end up having to transcode all the rushes and relinking them to the sequence.

Can some one advise the best route to take so that i can get grading

thanks

Harry

Thanks Most

I downlaoded and put and xml into it but i could only select the proxies in the conform part. Cann I not use the R3D files? Is there a tutroial for using this

thanks
Harry

Hey Harry-
Final Cut itself cannot directly read an R3D file because of its Quicktime architecture. The workflow that most seem to favor is using Clipfinder to recreate a sequence based on your prores XML file that uses the RED generated proxy files. Then, when you send this to Color, you'll be accessing the actual RAW data from the R3D files, and (once you install the RED plug in for Color) can actually tweak the RAW processing just like RedAlert, etc. The only issue I've heard of that you may run into has to do with the 3K files not coming across properly in Color, but as I have no personal experience with that, I'll have to pass the torch to someone else for advice on that particular issue. Good luck!
Peace,

Hey Harry,
Here is a link for a tutorial for using 4K Red material in Color after editing in Color.

The use of Clipfinder and complete descriptions as to how to do what is being asked have been on numerous threads here. Just do a search and you can find more than could possibly want to know.

If you imported your clips using the L&T window, is there any point in using ClipFinder?

If you use ClipFinder, do you also need to generate your proxies with it, or can you use L&T or RedRushes?

Hey Uli,

Whether you have created your QTs in RedRushes or log and transfer you can still use Clipfinder to reconnect back to your Raw R3Ds. If you just "send to Color", you will be grading the files you created through the L&T window vs's the R3Ds.

Cheers,

Thanks for all your help guys.

Just to make it clear I had initially done transcodes in redrushes.
I used clipfinder as suggested and chose to use the H proxies to send back to Final Cut as I had to put in footage shot on a Canon 5D and on a sanyo xatci before grading. I am not sure if i used the wrong setting but for some reason all the footage seems to have gone darker and doesnt look like its raw any more. Was there something i had to do regarding REdspace or 709 or when i send to color will it go back to red raw.

Also when i did do send to color it took forvere and only did a few clips. i am on version 1.01 is there a known issue with this. Or should i just go out and buy the upgrade today and start the conform and grading process from start.

thanks

The Saga Continues...
After some great advice from David I have got as far as FCP to Clipfinder to FCP to check the footage and it all comes up then when i send to color things go wrong. The timeline in color comes up with no footage and missing clips in the timeline. After some head scratching and examining of the timelines in Color and FCP I figured out that the missing clips were in fact all from the same three files and that everytime the FCP project would load up it would be looking for those three files and then it would move on. Not knowing what to do here I went out and got FCS 3 and loaded it up
and tried to send to color again and now color crashes and says its due to the REDCODE. now I dont know what is going wrong but I am slowly losing my mind

Any ideas on this

thanks

Harry
