  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

7D footage could be even like a 16mm film straight away

Am I bit drunk right now, or confused or whatever

but this little DSLR that can make a gorgeous pictures and with a little help from post app or plug-in will turn in a marvelous like a 16mm grainy document style beauty of footage.

Have a look at the example on Vimeo where also you can find to download a full version

Please, have a look at amazing 2.40:1 1920x800 H264 wide screen of quick & dirty FOOTAGE shot with Canon 7D,

EF 50mm F/1.4 lens that is not the best lens for this or any job anyway, but somehow it worked almost perfect...

Sanjin ... interesting that you should be talking about the Canon 7D HD video mode looking like Super 16 .... we're working with a very cool filmmaker, Christopher Gallo, who's just about to go off to Belgium to shoot a feature on the EOS 7D .... he shot some test footage a couple of weeks ago in California which we color corrected and sent over to Efilm for a film-out test .... we watched the 35 mm filmed version yesterday in Efilm's highly calibrated and state of the art screening room and it looked pretty damn good ... the natural film grain really did make it look like Super 16.

The Efilm producers were pleasantly surprised (and they've filmed out virtually every major Hollywood movie over the last ten years) .... so if you get a chance to put your graded EOS 7D footage through a 35mm film-out you will be even more amazed.

Here's a link to the Vimeo version of Gallo's film-out test .... obviously it doesn't have any film grain in it .... would appreciate your feedback on the image quality as a digital movie:

Cheers,
Neil

Hi Neil,

I'm back now.

That's amazing short movie shot by Christopher Gallo.

Be honest I'm still not so advanced and good as a shooter like Christopher is but I'm learning.

Also I went to Vimeo because my personal mac.com server's account screwed me up with the monthly traffic.

Back to my 7D test it was point and shoot using 7D auto focus because I didn't have my optical glasses on

and my Zacuto viewfinder is still "waiting" on a backorder.

It's a part of longer video test that I'm going to finish during next week.

I cut from 16:9 to 1920x800 2:40 widescreen size and add some film grain using

GenArts Sapphire FilmEffects FCP plug in to get rid of noise and tried to "convert" that to a sort of 16mm film grainy look.

My short footage is also available to download at the full size of 1920x800 H264 where you can see all the things much better.

Simultaneously I made some photo shots during video shooting and you will see that intercut too.

It's just a test.

Super 16 look ...

Super 16 look ...

Great little movie, Sanjin .... those Wien girls are real cute .... you're having way too much fun, dude! .... where were you shooting? ... die Mariahilfer Straße?

The 2.40 crop-look worked very well .... as a run-and-gun documentary tool the EOS 7D has real potential .... the low-light capability and stealth factor is amazing ... no one knows you're 'filming' .... just some crazy tourist taking photos ... loved the way you intercut the stills with the video mode.

Have to say that your "16mm film look" was OK but didn't really work for me .... there's something organic and natural about real 35 mm film grain versus digital noise .... if you get a chance to do a 35mm film-out with your 7D go for it .... works surprisingly well.

Have you had any luck with that HDMI software process from the guys in Sweden? .... didn't work for me ..... am trying Cineform's Neo HD now to see if the re-sampling from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 helps us in post.

Next time I come to Wien to visit my sister you'll have take me out with you (we'll leave my sister at home!) .. Vienna is a great city .... keep shooting man, you're developing a very cool style.

Neil

congrats Sanjin,

as Neil already mentioned, your style is quite unique!
I think you should proceed this way and do a doc-film, working beyond your knack for testing and sharing (this does not mean you should stop doing that!).

Neil,

thanks for reply.

A film look that I tried to achieve from 7D footage and called it "16mm look"

could be that has noting to do with look of a real print to film I guess.

It's only a play with many of post opportunities with 7D footage.

Swedish software I din't use because later I found that HDMI out is

limited to 29.97 fps that actually doesn't work so good in PAL world.

Conversion from original 7D H264 to Apple ProRess 4:2:2 HQ works very well for me...

Also I do have always a lot of fun with so many Viennese girls...

and now preparing to (inter)cut one short movie done with my R1 and 7D

camera tests...

When you are in Vienna next time I will organize for you one nice tour in away of Fellini's spirit

like in his "La città delle donne".

congrats Sanjin,

Peter,

also thanks for your reply.

Of course that I'm working on my first digital docu-movie and technical preparation is almost finished.

With R1 and 7D I am ready to go in that sort of project.

If you have a time we should meet soon (maybe during next week)

because I promised long ago to show you RR with MagmaBox and now have 7D with Glidecam 4000 Pro extra...

Let me know via PM or email when you would have time for that...

The 7D is not best, lowest cost, most light sensitive, real resolution just HD720...
BUT... still a marvelous combination of everything. I love the look of the picture, compact size, price, able to mount extremely fast glass. I have just shot a documentary on it and with some extra accessory like phantom power box, shoulder mount with V-lock battery mount, mattebox you have a real good camcorder worthy of shooting TV with fantastic result.

Janne,

good points about 7D and agree with you.

@Sanjin, never thought the day would come when I would read a post like yours on reduser after following this forum for over 2 years

@Neil, Do you have a color grading intership/mentorship program?

from your famous fancy boots collection sj?

Great Roberto B that can you still remember my boots shots done at the times before RED1 was even shipping.

But tis one is from one of the monuments/sculptures with horses from the most famous Viennese plaza ("Heroes' Square") Heldenplatz.

This is a boot from Archduke Charles of Austria (Deutsch: Erzherzog Karl von Österreich, Herzog von Teschen, also known as Karl von Österreich-Teschen).

Archduke_Charles_Statue.jpg

"The Heldenplatz ("Heroes' Square") is a historical plaza in Vienna.

Many important actions took place here — most notoriously Adolf Hitler's announcement of the Anschluss of Austria to the German Reich in 1938.

The plaza

The Heldenplatz is the outer plaza of the Hofburg and was built under the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph,
as part of what was to become the Kaiserforum (imperial forum), which, however, was never completed.
In the northeast, it is bordered by the Leopoldinian Tract of the Hofburg, in the southeast by the Neue Hofburg,
and in the southwest by the Ringstraße, from which it is separated by the Äußeres Burgtor ("outer castle gate").
The northwestern part, where there are no buildings, offers a view of the Ringstraße with the Parliament, the Rathaus (town hall),
and the Burgtheater. On the plaza, there are the two equestrian statues of Prince Eugene of Savoy and Archduke Charles of Austria,
who are remembered as great military leaders."

Canon Master Class ...

Canon Master Class ...

@Neil, Do you have a color grading intership/mentorship program?

R, unfortunately we don't have a color grading internship program here at RAWworks .... we're too busy grading well shot RED and Canon movies ;-)

However, we are planning on providing some kind of web-based service to serious Canon EOS filmmakers .... we'll have some heavy duty Canon DPs involved.

Will post details shortly.

Neil
