I'll just try to collect all these questions about the Scarlet here, because it is kind of difficult to filter them out of the according feedback thread:

1.) Where does the battery go on the Fixed Scarlet pack?

Jarred said, that they didn't decide what powering option they are going to include in the Fixed package. If I understood it right, there might be more powering modules in the future that were not talked about yet.

2.) What is the focal length of the 8x fixed lens?

We know the speed is going to be T2.6

3.) When will there be new information about the S35?
4.) When will you announce feature 21?
5.) What are the details for the mini-prime lenses (diameter, internal focussing)?
6.) Why is the Fixed brain longer than the Interchangable brain?

Answered below: The fixed lens needs more depth because of the lens.

7.) Will there be a specific order for the shipping of the individual Scarlets (Will anybody have a first call...)?
8.) When do you think you will be able to deliver them without backorder?
9.) Is there a recommendation for mounting an external mic?
10.) Will there be a package with a RedMote Pro instead of a normal RedMote?
11.) Is there going to be an anamorphic mode for the S35?
12.) What will be the estimated recording time on a 16GB CF-Card?
13.) Will 120fps recording be possible with the side-CF-module?

I little bit of reading between the lines has to been done here, so I might not be right. Jarred said that the CF-Cards won't do REDCODE 100 and that REDCODE 100 would be "useful" for overcranking. So it might be the case that to achieve full overcranking you would need the SSD module. Has to verified though.

14.) When will people have the opportunity to put down a deposit for the Scarlet (especially important for the Aussies among us)?
15.) What is the weight of the different modules and lenses, accessories?
... (I'll look out for more)

You can add weight to the list, both of the fixed brain & lens, all the components in the fixed kit, and all the option modules....and the non-fixed brain.

Some things I've read over the past few months that could help.

2: In FF equivalent it's a 28-?? Someone from RED posted it a while ago, but I can't find where.

6: The fixed scarlet has more internal parts for the lens, thats why its longer, see pic here - http://redgrabs.com/8sx.jpg

9: Last month someone from RED said they would be producing a low profile mic mic to fit on the front of the scarlet. No specifics.

14: Towards the beginning of the new EPIC/Scarlet news a while back, Jim said there would be plenty to go around at release and no deposits.... of course everything is subject to change ;)

If I'm buying the Fixed Scarlet package, can I trade up to the BOMB EVF and not take the $800.00 from the 2.8" LCD and put it towards the BOMB EVF?

Does the Fixed Scarlet need a touchscreen LCD to work? Or can you set everything from the REDmote?

[The LCD is useless to me shooting outside in the middle of the desert in the daytime.]

Also: What is the cost of an extra REDVOLT battery?

I'll try to update as soon as possible. I just got up. I'll have time this evening.
Jarred did answer some of the questions by now :)

Since the fixed scarlet kit is damn cheap anyway(the battery and the lens are "worth" ~150$ if you count in all the other things in the kit) then I'd be guessing NO since you can't take the prices in the kit literally(since we all know that the lens and the battery are actually worth times more than 150$)

I was thinking the same. If you don't need something, can I just replace it with another product.

Also with the CF card. I don't want to record on that, but the RED -Drive. So, I don't need it.

Big question that remains unanswered:

What about Stills?

This Scarlet modular system was supposed to be the ultimate hybrid format, but all the buzz so far has all been around motion picture capture. There is absolutely no stills information in this release, of even the most basic kind. For example: How many megapixels in size are Scarlet still images? Is it just a 3k native sensor that will deliver 3MP images?

Photographers were awaiting this announcement with some interest but the announcement had no information for us, whatsoever. Red abanondonned the 3K for $3k mantra, have they also abandonned the hybrid stills shooting concept?

They have the word Still on their Photo of the Fixed, but it would be good to know more about this.

A 3k sensor that is 16:9 would be a 5mp camera, not a 3mp camera. What are you talking about no stills info.

The redcode and color science apply to any image.
HDR mode
Strobe x-sync
touch focus and or fly by wire lens control on the wheels
gigabit still transfer

and so on are all stills oriented or applicable.

Sure, I guess it's not fair to say "no" stills info, since so many of the cinema specs do apply to stills and the word "still" does appear here and there in the release.

But I think you'll agree that the DSMC talk has been noteably thin on this information, and overall this Nov30 announcement isn't an exception. The fact that there's no MP info is conscpicious... are we really looking at a 5MP camera?

There's also been no talk about the two REDhandle options, which will give the camera its Dslr formfactor. What is that LCD on the top used for? Will we also need a RedMote and I/O along with LCD or EVF to make this into a viable packge, or will the handle incorporate some of those functions? Having a good picture of a stills "Kit" would at least give us stills guys something to pass around the forums ;-)

Its better to try to ask Jarred at "November 30th Announcement Feedback" thread. He sometimes reveal more new info there.
Like about touchscreen and face focusing
REDhandle dial wheel
elcectronic focusing/iris/zooming with still Canon, Nikon and RED lenses
Timelapse function already disscused
flash support
etc

Jarred (I believe) confirmed that the stills mode was full-sensor resolution RAW.

It would only make sense, really, as doing it at 24FPS full res is the hard part... a single frame should be easy.

Max shutter speed would be an interesting spec to know, however.

It has been said that the RED One has a full sensor read time of 9ms, and the Epic 5ms (I've seen some claims this was micro-secs, but I believe that to be a mistake).

If the Epic takes 5ms to read out ~2812 rows of pixels, then the sensor could do that a maximum of 200 times in 1 second (assuming instantaneous reset). I.e.- a maximum frame rate of 200fps. Conversely does that also mean a maximum still-mode shutter speed of 1/200th of a second?

The scarlet has 60% of the rows, which translates to a full sensor read time of 3ms. That's a max sensor frame rate of 333fps, and a 1/333th second shutter speed.

I wonder if these numbers are correct, or if there are other factors when the system is in stills mode.

On the Fixed Scarlet package. I still don't know where that battery is mounted? And what is the price of a spare battery? I think they need to show all the items separately.

…and is it me or did the 2.8" LCD- touchscreen go from $800 to $900? Looking back at some of the post, it was $800. By May or June of 2010, it will be over $5,000.00 :nonod:

Jarred has said that they weren't ready with the info for the Nov announcement to state what the battery offerings would be for the Fixed package. We know that the batteries mount either on the backend via a module (of which I believe there to be more than a few sizes) and the side handle with integrated battery. We will have to wait and see what is offered. At the moment we just know power will be included!!

Cool! thanks.

Hi Steven, you are actually confusing sensor read times with frame rates. Epic's sensor read time is indeed 5µs (microsecs) and I'm sure actual shutter speeds will be able to go quite high.

Spinning mirror is 4 microsecs and Epic is 5. One won't help Epic at all. It already matches (virtually) what a spinning mirror does on a film camera for skew.

Jarred actually addressed this in the Nov. 30th announcement. Here is the link.

Line #14 states: Independent Stills and Motion Modes (both record full resolution REDCODE RAW)

Here are the full resolutions of the DSMC brains: 2/3" Scarlets - 4.9MP, S35 - 13.8MP, FF35 - 24MP, 645 - 65MP, 617 - 261MP.

I know it can be a bit tricky to find this information but I am sure once the cameras get closer to release RED will put all these specs in one place.
