A few days ago I took part in the shooting of a TV spot. The RED One we were using had trouble recording onto one of the two Red Drives that we had, so we didn´t use it.

We shot half of our takes before lunch, then copied the files into external USB HDDS on a notebook (PC). Then, we started recording again on the same red drive without formatting it. When we finished shooting, we copied the remaining takes onto our ext HDD and returned the camera and red drives to the rental house.

When the editor checked the HDD he found out the first 4 or 5 takes shot after the first backup were missing. I am shure the camera was recording and showed no error message. There are no gaps between take numbers.

Has anyone ever experienced such a problem? Is there any chance that this is something elese than an inadverted human error?

I have never experienced missing files that appear as gaps in the file structure. They would be there, just corrupted or something.

Can you be sure they weren't just missed in the drag copy? Really sounds like human error.

This happened to me a few months ago and I read of someone else that it happened to. I wasn't very diligent about proper file transfer, using the drag and drop method rather than something that would check for errors. I don't remember if the other person's methodology was the same. I had 4 takes that disappeared with no break in the numbering. I've been more careful about my backups since.

I'd be curious if the files were still on the original media and were somehow lost during the transfer to the usb drive..

even if it was freshly formatted by the rental house, you could try REDUNDEAD if the particular clips are needed.... unless they zero out their drives...

Do you mean to say that there were no gaps between the actual r3d clip numbers, but certain takes were missing?

check if there is an empty RDC folder in the RDM folder.... if there is an empty RDC folder it could be that the cam stopped recording.... but that you should noticed at shooting....
