So I have been in film school for a year and I am in the final month for my cinematography class. Our final project is recreate an particular aesthetic from a certain movie. Not the story just the cinematography.

So the instructor gets to me and I get the only non-movie. "LOST". I have never really watched the show and I have researched some clips of the show and it seems to me that when the are indoors, it's pretty grimy, with low-key lighting and harsh lighting. When your outside its beautiful paradise.

For lack of a better word, I feel pretty lost as far as where to start. So thats why I am here... Any ideas?

Well it's really simple actually. Get the series on a DVD or download it or watch it on tv or whatever. Since it's supposedly addicting as crack(haven't ever watched it either) it shouldn't be difficult watching at least a few episodes. Then start asking simple questions: is it shot handheld or from a tripod? do they use cranes, steadicams or dollies? If yes then for which kind of shots? How are closeups managed? what is their editing style?

It's not that difficult, just break the show down to it's elements and then try to reproduce it as good as you can.

In my Intro to Film Process class, my teacher showed us a behind the scenes DVD of LOST. Look it up on Amazon. Its a great DVD to have even after you're done with the project.

I wish I remember more from the DVD, but I watched it over a year ago and I don't remember much from it.

So are you replicating the "lost" look on a Red?

I would watch the finale of each season 1-5 that will encapsulate alot of the look. Might want to bring some water and get a decent make-up artist or even yourself to replicate the "dirty/sweaty" look which reflect surfaces differently.

Goodluck,

I was mainly looking @ the 1st two episodes. One of the stipulations for the project is I have to shoot a scene in the Rain, day or night. I think either one would look cool, leaning toward day but I am not sure. And another ext. day or night with out rain.

I noticed from the two 1st episodes that almost all the shots are moving. Like it was shot on a steady cam/shoulder mount mixed with dolley or jib shots. But pretty much no static shots. And they did a great job with the lighting because it seemed 100% natural.

Any recommendation for ext. night w/ rain ? ( i know to back light rain )
