Well, where's the announcement already!?:emote_popcorn:

Although I know that a Scarlet most likely won't be under my Christmas tree this year, I'd like to at least know what the final specifications are going to be.

I'm actually more interested in the Scarlet's stills capabilities as I'm looking at going beyond the 12 megapixels of my D300. If not, I hope the Scarlet can at least match it and then I could have some more lens options without compromise (ie. Micro 4/3).

Based on some of the past Recon announcements, things could happen in the afternoon or later tonight. I'd hope for sooner rather than later, I've been holding off on some lens/camera-related purchases in case I've got to save up.

Scarlet as a still camera

Scarlet as a still camera

Personally, I don't think Scarlet is going to be a great still camera, it will be a great movie camera and I will buy it asap, but if you really want a better still camera, I would stick with your Nikon. I imagine that the Scarlet will do still photography in the same vein that the Canon 5dII does video, good but not great.

Though if the fixed can really do full 12mp stills at 120fps second, well that would be insane.

Yeah, my local dealers (ie. Samy's, Fry's Electronics, etc.) actually have both the 5D Mark II and 7D in stock so I'm not too worried about finding a stills camera but I'd like to know if I need to go for one camera or both. I guess we'll see at 4pm! =)

Which model are you talking about? I agree, it will be easier perhaps to shoot still on a Nikon, but I see no reason why s35 and especially FF35 won't be very comparable or perhaps surpass CaNik in quality, just a little heavier.

Scarlet fixed is a 2/3" 5mp chip. By today's standards not adequate for a pro still camera, but 5mp stills can look quite good as long as you aren't blowing them up to poster sizes.

Maybe RED is still at inner discussion to decide or not to decide about to temporary postpone

or even cancel Scarlet project just because of many reasons like a strong competition from lower priced and "mushy" video quality of new generation DSLRs,...

Hopefully I'm wrong here and we will read about that famous Hamlet's question "to be or not to be" in the next couple of hours...

Just a little bit to heat up this long waiting...

2/3" is a huge market of its own Sanjin. Scarlet does not have to compete with VDSLR's, just other 2/3" cameras. At anything under $10k for a decent field package it will be a real bargain.

Some of us don't need or want the larger sensors.

There aren't a lot of single-sensor 2/3" video rigs out there, though. I'm not sure how a Bayer 2/3" solution is going to compare to a 3-chip solution, but we'll see.

One nice thing about being able to shoot stills with a Scarlet is that it will provide an excellent opportunity to practice color grading and such with the RAW files, without having to do tons of rendering, etc.

For me, the 2/3" chip is a good step forward from my 1/3" Canon. HAndling focus will be more difficult and that is a good way to practise until one day maybe there will be a S35 or FF35 camera in my hands.
I'm also curious about color grading and I hope that especially keying will be simpler than with a DV cam (I'm keying footage from my DV cam right now, and it's annoying!). By the way: Does RAW mean something like 4:4:4 subsampling? (I know, another noob question :D )

Here is product I have heard great things about. I have not tried it but many happy users have.

Download some footage from here that Peter kindly posted for us over at Scarlet User and color grade it yourself.

I think people forget how awesome one can make 2/3" chip footage look. If you know what you're doing it can look identical to S35mm footage.

I'm really hoping we hear the price of the mini-RED Primes today because that is really the deciding factor between my choice of the 2/3" interchangeable and the S35 Scarlets.

If the purchase of a 2/3" Scarlet with mini-RED Primes costs more than the S35 Scarlet with a couple of really nice(but not L) Canon Primes then I'll go with the S35 Scarlet.

If its cheaper then I'm DEFINITELY going for the 2/3" Scarlet. Depending on how much the kit is, I'm pretty sure I'll be getting the Fixed Kit as well, but again it all depends on price which I hope will be explained in the next hour.

Red use Bayer instead and do not use subsampling. I dont know exactly how it works but no data supposed to be thrown away, just compressed with wavelet based at 12bit. Then Scarlet 2/3 will use redcode 42. I guess 42 is more compressed then lets say the S35's Redcode 80 since it has more rez the codec needs more flavor to keep the extra details..

I have and hvx200 and I'm so looking forward to leave the 4:2:2 since it have some artifacts into it, and also the dvcpro 8bit (Its a okay codec but not the option 1 for post).

Don't forget though that in the October 30th announcement Jim stated that the 3K Scarlet would get a higher compression rate.

But if it was still at 42 I wouldn't complain. The Redcode 42 stuff I've seen from the Red looks pretty awesome.

wow i missed that would be great. I wouldnt complain etither. They had me at 12bit 3k no subsampling:001_wub:

So the estimated announcment time (subject to change :)) is in 45 minutes?
