Lens Advice

or a 2.77 : 1 zoom ratio

Erfort, I have a question about your Ultra Prime 8R/T2.8. Does it cover the FULL ACTIVE PIXEL ARRAY of the X35/S35 frame of 31.26 mm Image Diameter? Have you had your lenses checked in advance of the X35/S35 release? It would be interesting to know.

Humberto Rivera

Hello Humberto, I know that it works in 4.5K with my Red but I haven't made any check

Effort,

The Zeiss Super Speeds are great lenses. However....
You could easily sell your set of Super Speeds for almost twice what a set of RED primes costs.
This would allow you to buy the newer, better glass from RED and still have cash left over.
The RED Pro Primes are in fact optically better than the Super Speeds.
They have a much larger image circle that allow for more even illumination.
The lenses are designed for use with a digital sensor, and will still cover the Epic frame when you upgrade.

Matthew thanx for your answer. By the way last January I met you in your store in Canoga Park, :) I asked you if you could fix my Nikon 80-200mm for the image shift that it has when you focus.
So the Super Speeds will not cover the Epic sensor?? What about when I upgrade the sensor of my Red one with the Misterium X, will they work with 4.5k?
The reason why I am keeping the Speeds is because they rent well. But I still need something to go 100mm and up.

Merci monsieur le connoisseur du galss.

Hello my brother in Albania! I am your trusted American friend! I will trade you many rifles and blankets, together with some whiskey, for those Superspeed lenses, which as you see from Stephan Williams post, are not valuable. Here in America (where we never lie) Superspeed lenses are commonly used for doorstops and paperweights.

I think Matthew Duclos is making the common error of mistaking Superspeed lenses for Porche automobiles. This is an understandable mistake, since Matthew (a very nice American) really doesn't know very much about lenses. And both Porche automobiles and Zeiss lenses, after all, are curved and shiny and made in Germany and have small writing on them. It is an easy mistake to make.

Hello my dear American, trusted, and not French friend. Don't forget to add some geographic courses to that. Accept chickens and rifles we do like German cars we have a lot, we know them better, and I like also some French fries I guess you don't, they kind of mess with the freedom. Every time I come to New York or LA as I do often, I admire the way our protective brothers are doing. Since here in Albania we trade chickens for Epics because the economy is doing very bad, if the set of Speed will work on Red after I upgrade the sensor, I might keep them for history, and buy a set of Red Primes latter.

So that will make = one Epic, one upgraded Red one, Super Porsche Speeds, chickens I can find a lot (we still don't have the mutated Kentucky chickens here but that is another story), a set of Red primes when they become complete, but I still would need a zoom or something higher than 100 mm for the Porsche set.

Oh I forgot, you will need to ask Jeff Kilgroe to give you some lessons of grammar(he seems to like living more in the reduser than in real life, no offense Jeff:smilewinkgrin:), in our forgotten world we spell them Porsche not Porche

I wont sell the Porsche Speeds to Matthew don't worry and thanx for the metaphoric advice

You forgot a few mirrors and colored glasses...
Guido

Hello Guidone my friend from Arghentina, how is Maradona doing man??

One more question, do you guys think I should keep my Nikon mount set? or sell them? they are brand new and I feel comfortable in using them. The 14-24mm is great, also the zeiss ZF are very good, I love the 100mm. I would like to have a better zoom (80-200) because of the image shift but I don't want to spend more in that direction.

I love this forum and you guys, every night before going to sleep I praise reduser to give me strength and knowledge, so that i can confront in the future with our bigger American brothers and still feel good and confident.

:001_tt2:

Thanks Psycho (Efort Kuke), I least now I know that it will cover the 4.5K sensor! It would still be nice to know if it will cover the 5K FULL ACTIVE PIXEL ARRAY of the X35/S35 frame of 31.26 mm Image Diameter. I think is something you might also want to know now about what fits on the new Red Epic X35/S35 that is just around the corner. Thank!

Dear Albanian brother! As for the French, we spit on their dog! Our French fries are no longer Freedom Fries since we no longer have Mr. Bush as our president (Mr. Busch?). Our French fries have returned to their original state as greasy, over-priced fried potatoes, dangerous to your health.

Porche is the American spelling of Porsche, by the way, just as Arghentina is the Albanian spelling of Argentina. All nations have their own colorful way of expressing ourselves! God bless all freedom loving peoples everywhere!

Regarding automobiles, perhaps you would be interested in some of our fine American automobiles, which are so popular here. Our fine G.M. and Chrysler vehicles are found everywhere Americans of fine taste park their cars.

I will throw into my offer a beautiful 1987 Chevy pickup truck from Michigan, with heavy salt-rust and sheet-metal rot, and a burning smell coming from the transmission. Such vehicles are highly prized here in my country by rock stars, corrupt politicians and pickup truck collectors.

You can trust me on this one, as an American. This is a real beauty and much more manly than the German Porsch (Porsche).

I’m glad you enjoyed the attention of our Homeland Security troops at the airport and I hope the cavity search was not too painful. You can’t be too careful these days, after all…

Personally, even so there are great STill lenses form various manufacturers, which are currently been used with the R1 every were, I will not care for the added size and weight, and will shoot with nothing else the the RPP's and RPZ lenses!

The new PRO line of RED lenses are just that Fantastic, I will only see my self shooting with them and cutting in with MP's when needed if job dictates faster or Wider/longer focal not available in the PRO line.

In fact I love the RED PRO Line of Glass, that I already have turned several users to buy the 18-85, to me the very best Zoo m lens I ever used. Including Zeiss, Cooke and Angenioux glass, and we know the price differences so no need to mentioned again, or I just did :-).

So here is my dilemma, i need to have something more than 85mm in the Pl series.

I am currently shooting with an Ultra Prime 135mm lens and find it very nice if you can afford one. You can also consider 135mm, 180mm and 200mm lenses for still cameras in combination with the upcoming Allstar mount.

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=31890

Among them Nikon and Canon make 135mm F2, Leica makes 180mm F2 and Nikon and Canon make 200mm F1.8 to F2. Smaller aperture versions are dirt cheap. Canon and Leica lenses even have the "right" direction for focusing ring. Of course, they are not hot items for rentals but they are very viable alternatives to get the job done (just like the Tokina 11-16mm zoom for super wide).

However, in my experience, a long zoom is indispensable for most narrative and commercial shoots. If your fund is limited, get a Cooke or Angenieux 25-250mm zoom for now as the other poster suggested earlier. Bear in mind though, non of the cine zooms available today covers the full 5K Epic sensor (30mm X 15mm, did some people call it X35?), maybe with the exceptions of Angenieux Optimos and DPs that barely cover the "real world area" (when cropped to 2.4:1 or 16:9). Cooke 25-250mm Mk II in this category is very affordable and readily available.

As for the still lenses, I'd hold on to them for Epic X35 or even FF35 use down the road. The Nikon 14-24mm is a great lens. People paying $10,500 for a PL mount, manual operation "Ruby" version is a powerful testimonial. If I am buying a new set of Zeiss though, I'd get the Canon version for the "correct" focusing rotation.

Hope that helps.

I once saw a Vivitar lens remounted to Aaton mount that was just the sorriest excuse for a cine-use piece of glass ever. Looked like someone cut the metsl with a hacksaw and a nail file. The glass was mediocre to start with.

i saw a remounted 110 and 150 hasselblad lens in bncr on eBay the other day, anyone know of those?

You don't want to use lenses made for large formats on small frame size format film or digital sensors as they generally don't have the resolution the format-matching lenses do.

I happen to own a Zeiss 110mm F2 and have used it on a Nikon D200 for fun.
