I know we're all just waiting for information on Scarlet in 9 days, but I thought I'd just make a nice old Speculation Thread on a topic that hasn't really been talked about a lot lately.

The price of the Mini-RED Primes.

In my opinion this is what's going to be the biggest factor in my decision between the Scarlet Cinema 2/3" and the S35 Scarlet. If the Mini-RED Primes are cheap enough I'll go with the 2/3" Cinema. If they cost close to what a S35 with a few decent Canon Primes would cost then I'll go with the S35.

Also, are the Mini-RED Primes going to have any electronic control. It would be cool for touch screen follow focusing (an idea which I think is completely revolutionary) but if it doesn't have electronic control I'm not gonna bitch about it.

So what do you guys think? Rough guestimates on price anyone?

Camera Mounts

Camera Mounts

It has been stated that any mount will go on any camera. (Other than the fixed lens Scarlet.) Normally it wouldn't make much sense to put a FF35 lens on a 2/3" sensor body (Unless you want to shoot very telephoto.), and even less vice versa, but Red's philosophy seems to be to assume that the customer knows what they are doing.

I think he's asking what mount comes standard with the 2/3" Scarlet and what type of mount the Mini-RED Primes will use.

I'm guessing either PL Mount or Mini-RED Mount. I guess it all depends on whether the lenses will be electronic or not.

yeah, I have been looking into lenses a LOT recently and I would be willing to buy a slew of nice FF35 lenes or whatever but I am going to get the 2/3 cinema, so I am really not sure what to do.

I would love to have one all around zoom for my run and gun days, and then a handful of primes.

what about 2/3 hd eng lenses?

Red Primes and one zoom is my wish.

I am looking at the 2/3 Scarlet as well. The price of the mini-primes will make my decision as well, this is the only thing that is the wild card at this point as we know pretty much what the brains and accessories will cost. I am intrigued at the fixed 8x it looks amazing and good quality, especially for 3-D. So for me the mini-primes vs the 8x is what I'm looking at. The FF35 is out of my league for now, although I have some nice stills glass etc.

Does anybody know if the Nov. 30th announcement will actually address the mini primes or not? Red updates seem to be notorious for leaving unanswered questions (not that they don't have a good excuse for it = )

I'm goin to guess that maybe MINOR details will be released about it... maybe a picture

mini-RED primes might be less price than the RPPs as they don't offer a constant T stop across the lens range (as announced).. and this makes the lens cheaper to manufacture..

But they are going to be Primes, no zooms to report, so really, there is only a difference in Size and optics that will make them less

If they are in the same ball-park as RPPs then my decision is made, 2/3 fixed. If they come in at $500-1000 ea, then I'll have to do some thinking.
I may still have to go with 2/3 fixed financially anyway
Edmund Optics have some 2/3" C- mount Double Gauss primes that come in (over here) in the region of £200-250. Ok, they're not suitable for cine but resolution-wise they're not far off what's needed, so may be a guide to mini-prime costs.

If they were electronic 2/3" primes below T2 with touch focus tracking, price would be no object for me. Size and weight are my priorities and electronic servo focus with a cheap remote system would make them perfect. I want to fit my camera package in a backpack (collapsable matte box, anyone? element technica?) but still maintain a film-style shooting method.
