  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Opening sequence of SNL shot with 7d/5d?

"The crew also found it easy to covertly shoot around the city without drawing a crowd."

i guess reading that article would be a good place to start...:iamwithstupid:

I can't for the life of me find the opening....Is it not released yet?

Stealth shooting with Canon HD DSLRs ....

The 'stealth shooting' capability of the Canon HD DSLRs is really quite something .... we worked on a CBS TV pilot shot in the Spring on the RED ONEs ... the TV show was based near Washington, DC, and at one point the Director wanted some background shots of the White House .... try setting up a RED ONE on the sidewalk outside the Oval Office and see what happens ... a squad car of Secret Service chaps will jump out and beat the crap out of you ... so the DP and AC pretended to be "tourists" and casually strolled up and down the sidewalk 'snapping' photos (in reality shooting HD 1080p video) with the EOS 5D Mk II .... got some great shots, including cops cars and SUVs with heavily tinted windows ... intercut with RED footage nicely.

So, if you ever need to do some 'stealth shooting' near the White House you know the camera to use (try the EOS 7D now - shoots at 23.98) .... but don't say I told you ;-)

Cheers,
Neil

P.S. also works well in the streets of LA where you need a Permit and Cop just to shoot HVX ....just as long as the camera isn't on sticks.

You're not kidding me. I was in DC recently shooting stills and they still asked me for my permit, (because we had tripods).

Damn that's nuts. All I need in Downtown Orlando is my camera and a tripod/Steadicam. Shoot we were even shooting at Lake Eola at like 4 am with permits but nobody came up to us at all except for a few bike riders and a homeless person.

Here's some screen grabs from the SNL shoot. Philip Bloom posted them because it was because of his "Dublin's People" short that convinced the DP to use the 7D and the 5D.

Got this from another thread:

Fast shutter speeds probably help the 5D. It doesn't handle motion blur very well, the codec falls apart.

How's the 7D in this regard?

Let me rephraze that. At night, even though we had our pass, we didn't need to show it to anyone. There was simply no-one there. (And yes, we needed the tripods for 30 second exposures).

So when we went back during the day, we decided to bring our tripods just in case (we didn't use them once) and thats when that asked us for the pass (even when we weren't using them).

So when I go back, I won't go though the trouble to apply for one, because, the truth is, during the night, you don't need one (nobody there) and during the day, well, who needs a tripod?

I read that they use Canon DSLR's for their digital shorts too....

They use lots of different cameras for their digital shorts. We've supplied a Phantom HD Gold as well as a Panasonic 3700 VariCam, among other cameras.
