Hi.

I'm hoping to find a few options for mounting the RED on it's side. I'd need to be able to use it both on sticks and on an intellijib.

any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated.

thank you : )

we've done it with an oconnor ultimate head and a weaver.

If you're 19mm you can put on your top and bottom rods, add two side rails, and slap a 2nd plate on the side rails - makes for fast changes back and forth

The Calavera works, but doesn't keep the RED's center of gravity over the tripod head.

I made a mount out of a peice of 1/2" aluminum angle. I put the tripod plate on one side and the Arri dovetail on the other, mounts my camera mostly centered over the tripod head (or other support). I don't have a picture of it handy, but maybe I can post one after a bit.

I do it all the time. I have a special piece of angle steel made up, about 6" on one side and 10" on the other with a bunch of mounting holes on it.

any of the dutch heads out there work pretty well, and in a panic a still tripod head can get the camera to a 'vertical' position (highly recommend a counter balance ie sandbag)

btw - Mammoth HD's RED footage Library has Vertical Footage and several projects underway that we want to greatly expand the offerings. Currently we have 4K vertical and HD verticals cropped from 4K H..... in the long run we're looking to have as large a Vertical Footage Library as the 'standard' library.

Our 'Vertical' footage projects are all digital signage/display and the international DOOH (Digital-Out-of-Home) markets. We are looking specially to add immediately - Lifestyle, People, Couples, Beauty, Portraits, Fashion, Luxury Lifestyle, Food, Dining, Personal Sports, World Locations, etc. Most of our clients are looking for that "Advertising/Billboard" look and style of shooting - very hi-end.

If your shooting vertical - contact me anytime (here or thru the Mammoth HD website)

Forgot to mention that with the o'connor/weaver combo it's very easy to just roll the camera to normal shooting position, and the roll it back to vertical. My AC configured it beautifully (it was nodal) and fully operatable either vertically or horizontally. Vertical shooting can be great for green screen (people on treadmills)!

When you mount the Red on it's side, remember to think about cooling.

Heat rises, so you want to have the right side of the camera (connectors, fan exhaust) facing upwards. The fans suck cool air from the bottom and shoot it out the top.

I've done sideways rigs using Home Depot angle-iron, 2 Tango/Swing heads put together (not recommended), sideways-mounted levelling head on a dolly, quick release plate sideways on an Oconnor head (you lose the ability to tilt), Cartoni dutch head on top of an Oconnor, and a Lambda head with a third axis (best way).

I'm creating my own custom mount to do this right now actually, as said before, you can just customize an angled piece of steel (if you have access to the machines necessary that is) or even design one and order a custom part from a metal shop. I'll post mine with instructions when it's done.

4.5K Vertical of a model with flowing hair lit well on pro green screen would yield an incredible key then scaled down and composited into 4K Horiz. Anyone have any sample footage composited like that?

We have been using 45 degree wedge. It can be used for vertical orientation and for shooting strait up. Disadvantage is that the center of gravity is outisde the center of tripod. You need heavy tripod for the setup.
