This could have been a fantastic movie.

80% of it could have been googled. The story was already there. Whole human history, astronomy, ancient legends, artifacts, theories of highly developed ancient civilizations...this was all lying on a platter. It just waited for someone to pick up the pieces, arrange them, and fill in the gaps. Things which could have made this story one of the greatest ever were thrown in with something like a mere line of text, while plot was built around cheesy, obvious and predictable elements.

Yes..it is much easier to criticize else's work watching from a distance, and yes there are many brilliant folks and a lot of hard work put into a full feature, especially of this magnitude...but what is this...

You have a crew of hundreds of people working their buts off the best way they can, to pull this off pushing the boundaries...and hundreds of million dollars are spent on stuff all the way down to very details...and somehow the very essence, the story manages to be forgotten.

Yes...this is mostly business, and yes its main purpose is making money. This movie will make tons of money. Not because of the quality of the story. Because it has the best marketing catch in the history of moviemaking.
The thing with this movie is that it would also make tons of money with more homework done on story (Google) and without the cheap cliché galore.

The fact that millions of people are going to see this topic served as a fast food meal makes me sad and pissed in the same time.

Well I certainly don't agree, I liked the movie I thought it had a pretty good story considering how much it got slammed after the trailer and it had a good message.
It was also shot a good deal on the Genesis apparently and the projection of the film I saw was amazing.

If you really feel that way pick up a pen and paper or open up whatever it is you write with and start writing a script.

So does every story of movies ever made. every story is already there. It just waited for someone to pick up the pieces, arrange them, and fill in the gaps.....

Titanic,Braveheart,The Passion of the Christ,Gandhi,Platoon,Gladiator,A Beautiful Mind,Schindler's List,The Godfather.... and so many others... Just waited for someone to pick up,arrange, fill the gaps, make it...

This film is no different than Titanic. Good VFX,CG plus a emotional and engaging characters and story. If u think this film is a fail, so does Titanic. If Titanic is a fail, so does every movie ever made..

The more important question is, why do people working on film industry, critics or regular cameramans like many in this forum, hate this kind of good films that should come more often?

Transformers,Armageddon, The Day After Tomorrow are one of the most amazing films ever. Yet all people say is, F**K Michael Bay.
F**K U Guys.

You're confusing visuals (aesthetics) with story telling.

I'll take Driving Miss Daisy over any Bay or Emmerich films in a nanosecond.

Movies were never about storytelling alone. If it was, it will still be in black&white and Silent.

I'll take The Rock or Godzilla over Mister Johnson in a picosecond.

Just came back from the cinema.
TOTAL CRAP ON EVERY LEVEL.

If went to cinema, paid the ticket price and watched it, it's not a crap anymore. Well, that's the whole point of making movies. If u paid to watch, it means its really good.

In that case I paid only for the promotion of that thing; the promo had enough impact to drag me to theatre.

BTW
The sequence where the water flows into the Arc was shot on some cheep video; it felt like HV20 or something...

Visuals must be paired with a good story.

If this wasn't the case all one needed to make a good film was a DP and a VFX crew.

If you ever studied anything related to dramatic writing (Robert Mckee, Lajos Egri, etc) you can spot pretty clearly why these big movies with great visuals but shallow scripts fail.

That is why there's something called genre. It means that, there are many ways to make something and there are no fixed boundaries.

Having said that, if u ever studied the thirty six dramatic situations there is one situation classified as DISASTER, and the characteristic of this category includes Natural Catastrophe and/or the Fall of Humanity which 2012 correctly depicts.

I couldn't see a single flaw in the script. It has a beginning, a middle, an end, character developments and suspense. Which part of the scrip was a 'Fail'?

The script is NOT bad/fail. You just think it is. It's because it is fashionable to say, " I watched it, but the story sucks".

I'm not even referring to the movie directly. If I see it I'll say something.

But a blockbuster with huge VFX work usually has crappy storyline along with it. Like Day After Tomorrow, lame.

I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that I say this just because it's fashionable.

There's more to dramatic writing than just following steps. It's not a formula.

Great scripts usually come from years of hard work, big production scripts sometimes come in rush, with no inspiration to back up the hard work, so it's pretty easy to understand why sometimes they are just shallow.

I saw it last night and sure it wasn't anything Oscar worthy but it wasn't a half bad movie.

It was what it was. If the Earth's crust rapidly shifted, that's what it'd look like. You can't really show any sort of movie showing the end of the world without heavy graphics.

Now yes, it was very unrealistic in a sense that all of these normal characters were expert drivers and pilots that could outrun firey explosions. But again, it was what it was. An action packed thrill ride. I mean if they made that into a CGI ride at Universal I would TOTALLY ride it. That'd be fun as hell.

I think it might have been better if they made it entirely centered around the family and their survival instead of the sub plots with the President, the doctor and everyone else. It kind of took away from the story. If it was just centered on the family it probably could have been way better.

You fail in your misconception, just as the Hollywood does by creating/analyzing scripts as something mechanical.
Formulas don't really work when applied to cinema, unless you agree to chew someone's else gum over and over.
I am personally discouraged by amount of crap and ruined good ideas for the sake of profit.
This is how I see it so please don't take it personally; I may be wrong or drunk:willy_nilly:
