I've still got one of these around, its not too bad since I got the logic board fixed and everything inside maintained after it decided to blow on me. Either way I've got a MacPro and I'm very happy with it. My issue is that this G5 is now sitting around...

So, was wondering if anyone else still had one of these old none intel macs and what they use it for? Can it fit in the RED workflow at all? All the programs are for intel so as much as I wanted to convert this for an on location Rocket I can't. I also asked some Apple peeps if I could put the two together and have my G5 as a render node and they said its kind of difficult since most of the software is now going intel only.

Anyone got any ideas? Kind of stuck on this one.

Thanks!

Definitely- iTunes Juke Box or Boxee box. That said, it draws a large amount of electricity if you check your bills. I'd go instead with a sell and buy a new Mac Mini for media serving.

Mine is doing server duty - ftp, media, iTunes, Squeezebox etc.

You could run Leopard Server on it, host your own website, email, etc... with a static IP.

If you have another hobby like, your a musician or something, you can build it to be a nice DAW workstation with it.

Or, sell it. A mac mini server is $1000, and runs snow leopard server and uses 17 watts when idle. The power consumption is a big deal on that G5 box.

I just decommissioned one myself, first box I cut 1080p on. How things change.

I've still got a G5 quad. Wonderful machine. Doing server duty as well... Although, it's usefulness for that is running out. Or at least it's cost-effectiveness is: see power bill. Besides, it probably still has good life as a workstation left in it to the right person. It has a Quadro card and a few other goodies. Any takers??? Hehe I've been too lazy to ebay it.

Thanks all for the input!

I guess I could turn it into a server though probably companion or the big daddy for the Mac Mini server we are in the process of buying. Didn't think of using it as a server, should've asked here sooner...

Not really got much of another Hobby, so I might just switch it into a full fledged media server for all ripped DVDs and music probably placing Final Cut Server onto it too and having back ups for RED footage on it.

Can't imagine selling it for much though, its kind of sad really, should've done it as soon as the MacPro's came out. *sighs* the pains of technological evolution.

I use mine as an After Effects render farm, can't use REDCODE but works wonderfully for prores etc.

Yup. I just pulled my 2.5ghz G5 out of storage closet. Since my Mac Pro is constantly being use for transcoding, etc., I can use my old G5 to edit with ProRes and use Shake for compositing, etc.

I have one of these as well. I upgraded it to 8GB of RAM about 3 weeks before the intel macs were announced. It renders like crazy, it's a shame it can't do RED files.

I was thinking about buying an intel mac mini, does anyone know if there is a way to link my G5 to a mac mini to use it for rendering?

Qmaster... but the G5 will still not support .R3D workflow. Both machines will need to be looking at the same volume of media.
