Would like to know what is the best audio interface for say recording a nightclub performance with multiple mic inputs. How do you guys handle such workflows? Do you record to a computer, to a stand alone device or bus into the RED? I'm not too familar with audio interfaces and computer recording. Would the Mackie ProjectMix I/O be a good start:

I will need something with at least 8 mic inputs. Money is not an issue so please recommend the most professional/portable device for this purpose.

First recommendation would be a portable field recorder sans computer. Sound Devices makes the 788t which has 8 microphone inputs. No EQ though, but it sounds great and is rock solid assuming you keep it cool, which shouldn't be a problem on a music remote. LTC timecode of course.

If you need to use a computer, perhaps you need to insert effects or utilize EQ, the Metric Halo ULN-8 is the best of the best, also with 8 channels of mic pres. Mac only and does support LTC timecode too.

You could also use a traditional mixing board or one of the hybrid digital recording hoards, easily spending a couple grand to many tens of thousands of dollars, all depending on how complex you need to get with he signal chain, but if you know what you want and why you need to go that way, you wouldn't be needing to ask questions about it.

Normally for music venues, there is a front of house engineer who already has a PA and possibly a recording solution. You might jut need to hook up a multitrack or stereo recorder (including going line input directly to your camera) and just take the feed hat the FOH engineer gives you.

If you really want the best:

This is a top of the line audio interface with top of line preamps, top of the line converters, portable (1 rack unit), can be DC powered, Dedicated SMPTE LTC I/O for Timecode, etc.

You also mention your not too familiar with audio. If it is just for a specific event might be better off hiring a soundcrew or remote recordist for the gig. It will certainly be more economical if you need professional results.

Thanks Tom & Jean... the 788T looks like it will fulfill most of our needs.
