Hi All

I am conforming my edit in flame alot of CGI to be dropped in.
The question is would it be better for me to grade in color 1.5 and output to dpx files for flame or just get it into flame with the .r3d files and grade in flame

thanks in advance

The Flame is much more responsively working with DPX than with R3Ds. Debayering will eat a lot of the resources. I would use RedLog encoded DPX and do colour correction within Flame. Because you use Flame for conforming and finishing I guess that your project is short, a TVC for instance. Otherwise a different post production path would be meaningful.

As far as I understand and have experienced, Flame (and Autodesk in general) does not support the direct edit of R3Ds, you will be transcoding everything using a background piece of software to DPXs. From what I've heard it does this well, maintains the Metadata information and the clips work well for being graded/colored.

If your project has heavy FX and you are doing those in Flame, my instinct would be to grade in Flame. My experience (from a single project so others probably know better) in going from graded clips to Flame was less than smooth.

I think Autodesk's Flare can be used to bring in r3d's directly onto the DL framestore. With all r3d trimmings... iso, wb, colorspace, gamma space, etc.

Either way would work Riki, but pre-transcoding is a method I prefer, regardless if I am grading in Shake or Color. Like Hans suggested, RedLog (gamma space) and Camera RGB (color space) transcoded DPX 10-bit out of Redcine would be the way to go. Make sure you have Redcine doing a full debayer. Should be a smooth session with in Flame.

Hi All
Thank you so much for all your advice, Hans you are absolutely correct it is a TVC, hence this workflow.
I will keep you informed, as I am going into the grade right now.
regards

Smoke/Flame and Flare do not support native R3D files. But you have multiple ofptions:
-You can use Autodesk Wiretap Central (shipped with any Autodesk Systems products) to convert the R3D to DPX or to the native Autodesk system format.

or

-You can use Autodesk Lustre, our real-time grading solution that does support native R3D grading.

There is a workflow white paper available at:

Hope this helps

only thing I would add is to find a RED ROCKET and cut your trancode time MASSIVELY... while getting a FULL 4K DEBAYER.

best $5K Ive ever spent. Prior to RR, it cost about $125K to get the same speed. ITs amazing. Cant imagine RED workflow without it anymore
