  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good hdd configuration for working from AE, FCP or other..

I have my g tech (not graid) external containing my project rendering right now from After Effects in H.264. The project is only 4-5 min in length but has been rendering for hours.

My first error (of many) is probably that I'm exporting to the same drive the project is coming from? Away from other means and comp is full...

Also, I'm using FW800 instead of my Sonnet tempo sata express card/34. How big is the speed difference between the two?,, and is the Tempo a decent card for utilizing the express slot on my macbook pro 3.06 w/4gb ram?

I just want to hear what could be a good processing flow between the what I have because I will probably be facing this quite a bit.

Thank you. I know it might be simple, but this the fastest way to learn from experienced individuals. Go ahead and thwack me :emote_whack:

Thanks
Jon

H.264 is computational intensive, not that much load on disk I/O.

Thanks Uli,

I appreciate the post,, I think it was all the rendering coming out of AE but didn't realize messing with the levels would put me back so much.

First off, I agree with everyone else, render to another codec then do your compression to H264. H264 is excruciatingly slow in AE.

You might try rendering to ProRes 422 or Apple Intermediate then using Quicktime to export to H264.

I have a 2TB GRaid running off my Unibody 2.53 MBPro w/ 4GB RAM. I can both read and write in FCP or AE at 2K without problems. Express card/34 is a bit faster, but it also runs well off FW800.

Ideally I read source from one drive and write output to another, but if all I have available is the GRaid, it works fine.
