Alright guys this might be a long technical question post please bare with me.

We are currently shooting our production on Thompson Viper 4:4:4 recording to a uncompressed recorder which is large and bulky. We want to shoot our production using the Viper since we have the ability to record uncompressed and we are indoors in our set/studio.

The problem is... We are planning on going out to get some plates for footage that needs to be keyed on/replaced on the green screen.

Since our system is so bulky we are wondering if we can shoot the plates with red and use the footage from red to be keyed on to our green screen footage.

our current DPX information are as follows:
10 BIT LOG 4:4:4 1920x1080

I am not very familiar with the red workflow so i could really use some assistance from you guys.

If your question is, "Can I get 10-bit log DPX at 1920x1080 4:4:4 out of the RED?", then the answer is, "Yes, you can.".

Just a question out of curiosity - which recorder are you using that is large and bulky? It was my understanding that these days uncompressed HD recorders were about the size of a mobile SR deck.

As Charles said, you should be fine shooting red for your BG plates. Red actually also works pretty darn well for green screen too.

While at it, you might wish to do a side by side green screen test with Viper and Red for future reference (and as you can guess, i'd be interested in hearíng the results - i've never shot or posted Viper footy)
