  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cheapest Scarlet possible?

Maybe they will through in a 8GB CF Card. :coolgleamA:

I imagine that the fixed will be somewhat of a 'loss leader,' just like any entry level product for a company. It's pretty safe to assume a package price discount for a kit or any configuration so don't rely on the individual MSRPs to assemble a total price.

I am still waiting on the Mini Primes prices, what happened to them? Furthermore, if we are going to need to buy a bunch of modules and other pieces to get a real working kit, then I am either going to look at the 2/3 Interchangeable or the S35 as well.

Seems like the 2/3 Fixed is slowly loosing its appeal.

KO

In some way the 7D or 5D might be a little 2/3" scarlet killer... not because of the video quality or anything like that (please not THAT discussion again) but because people buy the 7D as an interim camera at the moment and thus have some canon glas at home. So they might choose to upgrade to the Scarlet S35 to use their Canon lenses as they do not make that much sense on a 2/3" camera... What do you think?

That's my plan. I'm thinking I'll sell my Canon 30D and HVX200 and combine the two with the Canon 7D. (My main problem was the issue with the rolling shutter problem as I do a lot of action/fight scenes in our projects, and the supposedly difficult time of editing AVCHD).

Ofcourse, me being at the consumer/prosumer level that I am, an S35 is quite pricey and that would be more likely to happen YEARS down the road. At which point technology will have marched on and the Canon 7DmkII might solve all the issues I've been faced with and end up never switching to RED like I had hope.

Well, regardless. I think it's better to over-prepare than under-prepare. If you figure the whole shebang is gonna cost you 10K, and it ends up only 6K, well then you can put the rest on a nice vacation, or save it.

It's not just the camera that most people will need. You might want to get a different tripod/fluid head, stabilizer, more CF cards, new camera bag, pelican case, lens adapters, filters, new software... who knows.

This might all be true but beggars can't be choosers. The most important thing for the new "low-end" REDusers is to get started. Overcoming the first big hurdle that is the first investment and then buíld from there.

You make it sound like people decide not to save enough money because they think it is not necessary but that is not the issue. People simply have a certain limit financially, at least within a given time frame. Somebody might be able to afford 6k by the end of next year, 10 k maybe by the end of 2011. As you said: Who knows?

there are many topics on this and here is something i put together from another thread for you to consider

DISCLAIMER: AT ONE POINT I SPECULATE ON THE PRICE OF THE 2/3" FIXED BRAIN...THAT IS JUST SOMETHING I DID TO GO WITH MY LIST OF GIVEN PRICES WHAT I THOUGHT TO BE THE MINIMUM ACCESSORIES NEEDED TO SHOOT....IT IS ONLY A SPECULATION ON BRAIN PRICE AND OF COURSE ACCESSORY PRICES ARE "SUBJECT TO CHANGE"

__________________________________________

I'd like to ping in on this as well

for fixed lens scarlet brain you would only need

side CF module - 500 (media)
Side Handle - 950 (control)
8 GB CF card - 165 (media)

you still need a viewing option and as far as I can tell the best price option so far is either the 2.8" touchscreen from RED for $900 or the ikan 5.6" HD monitor package for 850 which I will round up to 900 which brings the total after brain price to

$2,515

For 2/3" cinema it could honestly be the same because Jarred confirmed for me that as of now brains will come with a PL mount - "subject to change" of course

seen here - post 859

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=37010&page=86

you could always take the difference in price between the fixed lens brain and the cinema brain and spend that on a lens knowing that a) the lens you can afford with that money might now be as good as the zoom on the fixed but b) that you do of course have the option for saving up for primes or better zooms later

overall I think everyone should take a chill pill and wait until Nov. 30th. What's the point in trying to make definite plans on whether or not you can afford this system until you have concrete specs and prices to go on.

Also, to be realistic the fixed rigged I had described here with lets say a speculative brain price of 3500 would in total only be about 6,000.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search...Ns=p_PRICE_2|1

thats a list of cameras you can get for under 6000. Notice that out of all these cameras none of them will get you RAW, 1080p60, or any framre rate above 60p for that matter, and anywhere near the modularity of RED. Even the interchangeable lens cameras are going to be smaller sensor cameras (1/3") rendering your 35mm glass (which is barely useable on 2/3" scarlet) and even some of your 16mm glass totally useless for anything less than wildlife, sports and extreme telephoto shooting. Not to mention you'd be hard pressed to find a nikon, c, or pl mount for those cameras. I couldn't find any. Also, they all seem to be 3ccd which won't work right without CA.

I'm not bashing those cams, they are great depending on what you need (event shooting on a budget especially). I am just saying you should all wait until you have the information, or until you can't possibly wait any longer for it before you make a decision.

Of course when planning for a camera always have a plan B.

edit: the above listing was for 2/3" fixed BRAIN and 2/3" CINEMA.....there are no concrete details on the specifications or price of 2/3" FIXED KIT so I won't even try to speculate on that
