  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic X vs. Red ONE with Mysterium X Sensor Upgrade (?)

What is the difference between an Epic X and a Red ONE with the upgraded Mysterium X sensor? Obviously the Epic X brings a ton of improvements as it relates to design and camera functionality, but will the images essentially look the same? (won't they have the same sensors?) I think I am missing something completely, but I am not sure. Any help would be appreciated!

Also, just out of curiousity, what is the major different between the S35 sensor and the FF35 sensor. I know the latter is Full Frame, but will that sensor offer all that much more resolution for filmmakers to make it worth waiting? Thoughts?

Ted said in a recent interview that the image would be virtually the same, but that the Epic would have all the advantages of a much more evolved system—higher frame rates etc.

gotcha,

that makes sense. so the Red ONE with the new sensor won't have the 250 fps at 2k or the Redcode 250 - but will it have the 200 to 8000 ISO?

i suppose at this point it is anyone's guess...

I think the RED ONE with MX will also have a max rez of 4.5K

The way I understand it is that all you get from the R1 M-X Upgrade is a sensor rated at a higher ISO with greater dynamic range. Resolution & frame rates will not change...

The fact that the FF35 has a larger sensor size than the S35 does not immediately mean it offers more resolution. In theory the FF35 could have the same resolution, utilizing larger photosites (although in reality the FF model will probably have more resolution than the S35). I think final specs for these two cameras are still far into the future. For me, the main advantage of FF35 would be the greater angle of view.

I'm guessing the latter...

That would only make sense, as they otherwise would have to swap all of the image related internals of the cam... I guess...

Going from 12 bit to 14 or 15 (?!) is not a trivial matter for the same hardware. I should think.

ANyways, will be fun!

I still cannot find answer from Jarred or Jim about Mysterium-X is 15 bit.

This is very interesting and huge step

"The 15 bit output delivers dynamic range you have always wished for"

(it's from picture here http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=501405&postcount=10)

Well...
Rgey could take those lovely 15 bits out of the A/D and resample them (pr oversample, I'm not sure what is the right term here...) to 12 bit, pretty much like Sony/Pana/Arri does.... Then you'd have the higher effective/percieved latitude/DR even though it's not mathematically in the files.

Actually I'm pretty much guessing that's what they're doing, given that the new chip is out in the field, and increased latitude/DR is one of the feedbacks...

Speculations, speculations... LOL
