Wanted to open up this discussion about camera weight, as it has come up with many different owners and posters in the past year.

I'll preface by saying that I think that one thing many people talk about with the Red One is that it is a heavy camera. Sure, it can be built in many configurations but as I look at renders of the EPIC and I see the specs on what only the "brain" weighs, then I have to really think about how much the EPIC is going to weigh in at once it is build with the same functionality that the RED One has now.

I want a lighter camera (PLEASE DON'T TELL ME TO BUY A FIXED LENS SCARLETT) or I at least want the Epic to not weigh much more that the R1.

I'm thinking that a lightweight EPIX-X is going to come in at about 30 pounds.

The lightest? Brain, lens, CF module, battery, might make it a great doc camera at 18-20lbs.

I hope Steve Gibby gets in on this thread.

David,

The Red body by itself is around 7 lbs and I think Red has said there is no increase in weight there with the Epic. (Not sure which modules were included in that measurement) So the real decrease in weight seems to be coming from lighter more compact accessories and integration of a lot of the functionality into modules.

It seems like the camera will take a major weight reduction in part because it needs less battery power and thus smaller batteries are becoming practical. Likewise if the Red drive is replaced by some of the smaller technologies that have appeared in the recent renders that will also account for a drop in weight.

Likewise in many handheld configurations I'm not sure you will need the I/O module if you can record seperate sound. My hope is just to run the brain the battery module and one recording module most of the time.

The bomb EVF looks significantly smaller and less massive. They also have smaller LCD options which make more sense for handheld.

So to me if the camera comes in at about 20 - 25 lbs with a functionality similar to a 416 then I think that is perfect. Less weight than that is not so good for handheld.

Yeah,

I agree Ian. I really want to be able to make it a pick up and record small, intimate doc style camera too. One think about the R1 is that it commands a lot of attention and it's hard to kind of "melt away" while you are shooting with it.

i know the fixed lens Scarlett will most likely be the small intimate comfortable camera, but I like the idea of getting the EPIC-X to be this way too.

The lightest shooting config I have managed is with Nikon glass and still sits in around 18lbs.
