Got to thinking about it...

The Redmote seems to have a fairly large color LCD. So maybe it's alot different than the back of a Red One. If you think about it, it's competing with the back of a DSLR, which can display images as you shoot, as well as histograms and other data. Except... the Redmote doesn't need to be connected to the camera at all.

So, my speculation is that the Redmote is much more important than the back of a Red One. I'm wondering what you think it will do :)

I've always kind of hoped/presumed that in Stills mode (where, if shooting only stills, not hybrid, you'd probably just have the brain, handle, EVF and REDmote) that the REDmote LCD would in fact act just like (or very similar to) the LCD on the back of most DSLRs. Of course I don't expect LiveView kind of functionality on REDmote, because thats getting back to video which would probably only be available in the EVF or external LCD, but as a quick preview to check framing and basic exposure of the photo you've just shot, I think it would be great. But I think we'll know in 3 or 4 days...cool!
Peace,

I believe Jim has said the Redmote will not have liveview at all, and from the sounds of it I infer that it wont have still view at all, as such I can't put it in the category of the rear of a DSLR.

Speaking of that, now that I think about it, that would hurt it's ability as a DSMC, and I imagine they've thought through that so I must be missing something. Hmm, guess we gotta wait till Oct 30'th for round 3 of 'everythings changed'

The 5Ds, et. al. have really had more success than I think anyone would have thought a year ago, at least as far as purchasing the cameras for filmmaking in concerned. My thinking, is that since it's now almost a year since we've heard hard specs from RED, is that the DSMC line is now slightly more in line to attack the benefits of VDSLRs, the biggest of which is their obvious superiority with stills. So, like you say Shawn, I think the DSMCs really need the ability to very closely mimic at least what a regular DSLR can do in a stripped down configuration. Jim and Jarred and the gang have all said that the whole concept of DSMC is that the quality of the videos and stills are equal (and both high quality.) Obviously this applies to picture quality, but heres hoping it also applies to usability and interface between the two modes. Anyway, we're 3 days away, so I guess I can stop now.
Peace,

-Harry

How do you feel about a tethering option on the REDmote? Connecting to laptop for further extensibility to camera? i.e. upload/download look profiles, camera configurations, scene data containing meta data download for VFX team, sync profiles for multiple cameras? Any thoughts?

Not that my opinion necessarily matters - it sure ain't gonna change anything - but I like it. This would basically be a very much more advanced functionality similar to what the SD card does in the RED One. So yeah, I like it.

I think I answered my own question related to a tether. Posted renders show a port connection.

All I know is I want a loop on it so you can put a lanyard on it and hang it around your neck. Either that or wristband :-) I know I'm gonna lose it if it's not tied to me somehow. Maybe I'll velcro it to my light meter.

Joel you can always buy another. :) Or keep a spare :)

I think my fear will be having it in my back pocket and crushing it when I sit down.

I know that my way of working with my Nikon has often been to take a shot and then look down at the histogram to see if I'm in the right ballpark.

But that being said, a DSLR has no electronic eyepiece. (For that matter it has no eyepiece at all in video mode since the mirror is up.) So perhaps Red will choose instead to invite still shooters to look into the eyepiece and learn to use False Color. That will be a much better way to work I guess.

True. But that feels slightly less intuitive. You think?

REDMOTE competes with the little B&W LCD screen on the top right of a Nikon or Canon. No live view. But complete wireless control over menus and run/stop.

The 2.8", 5", 7" or 9" LCD or EVF competes with the 3" LCD on the back of a DSLR.

Put it in the front pocket of your shirt... you probably won't crush it when you sit down.

It does. It's a mini-USB port.

Jarred stated that it was for charging it's internal battery.

I'd be willing to bet that it will facilitate more than just that, however.

Can you confirm that the COMIC SANS font will be carried over from RED ONE back panel to REDMOTE? ;)

You've got to hope so considering it's USB. Seems weird that they'd pick an data interface that just so happens to carry power and only use it for charging. Well, the announcement in a few days really can't come soon enough.

Well, the mini-usb is becoming standardized as a charging interface on cell phones, so it's a smart move to use a standard. That could be the end of it. But it's hard to ignore that it's conveniently a data port as well. If that feature doesn't come pre-installed, maybe we can have an additional firmware update to give the redmote more features than originally spec'd, kind of like we got with 4.5k.

Please note: the above is pure speculation. I'm just thinking optimistically.
