Is Canon taking lessons of Jim Jannard's business model?

«Canon today announces that it is currently developing a firmware update to the EOS 5D Mark II to enable the recording of high definition 1080p video at 24 and 25fps. The decision to develop new firmware to support these features has been taken following feedback received from cinematographers and photographers.»

Will buy them another 6 months of loyalty until NAB2010, now that's smart marketing...

Sound familiar?

the shit of it is Canon says their update may not be available until the first half of 2010 (like 8 months from now). A day late and a dollar short.

* Naaa, that announcement by Canon means they could have given it to owners a year ago, but marketing has reasons to think that you should think you will get 24p/25p .... later :sifone:

* The same announcement by Red (update first half of 2010) would mean that they think it should be possible in theory, although they really have no clue yet how to do it, but the announcement will fill the fan club with admiration ...

Announcing announcements with future announcements...

I prefer to think that we have an ongoing discussion with our customers and "think out loud". However, we can easily change that philosophy if we get too many smart ass responses.

Jim

Jim, if only more companies would adopt your "philosophy" can you imagine how much better some products would be?

Red is a business and it needs to compete and be profitable at some point in order to survive and be there for us in the long run but that doesn't mean you can't be open with your customers and deliver what they want (or at least make a good faith attempt to do this). Kudos to you Jim for getting this.

I love the collaborative give and take that is a key part of your business philosophy. Please don't change that.

It's obvious they have an eye on the RED road. This has meant a lot for us, customers. There's a before and an after regarding market feedback.

I keep a secret hope Jim is prepping something really awesome for all of us granted the recent 7D launch and 24p/25p @ 5D Mark II announcement. Scarlet just can be a milestone. Do not forget Scarlet is not only 2/3" but S35 and FF35 formats.

Don't know if my comment above got put in the smart ass category, just for clarification I was referring to Canon (and their effort to create and exploit mini markets based on "updates" that should've been part of the original camera/firmware).

IMO Red and Canon are nothing alike.

What Red is doing via reduser.net (an ongoing conversation with professionals who use the gear) is about the most revolutionary thing I've seen when it comes to business models & I'm not brown nosing... it's just the truth.
It's like putting nitrous oxide in your R&D... not to mention that it gives many the feeling that they may have played a small part in the birth (and continual re-invention) of RED/Epic/Scarlet.
