  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Did anybody had that problem? and how to deal with it? Since build 17 I've seen green screen, auto-shotdown, over heating (all happening from time to time)
But using cf cards I felt bulletproof since no disk, no problems. Last severall days having that error on 8 and 16 gig cards runing on buid 20. Can not chek on disk(having sata trans error, probably bad cable)

Which version of Build 20? Codec errors on playback have been addressed.

If you have SATA_TRANS error you need RED to inspect your RED-DRIVE.

It's not a playback error (they are not a trouble anyway, moving back and forth between clips, and mostly clip plays)
And not a post error. It happens while recording.Clip stops to record, next clip have the same codec error and I have to reboot. The last time was the worst cause the same time while rebooting was booting error, until I changed the battery.
Never had a chance to get an error at home, only on production when everybody waiting for the magic to happen.

We had this too, last week. Without warning, after recording 20 minutes of footage...no change to camera...not hot at all. Suddenly: "Codec Error" or something like that. We put another drive on camera...same deal. Had to re-boot to get it to come back and record.

The footage was fine, luckily, but it did scare us and waste a good bit of time as we re-did the interview entirely on the 2nd drive in case it was lost.

Thx.

Kevin

Yes the footage stays ok to the moment it stops. Right now did a test-- about 20 cards of recording. Not a chance of any error.
Probably erorrs suppose to happen only on production, so the director and dp will know what a DIT for. ;)

I only started getting the message after installing Build 20, but only with Arri Zeiss super speed lenses. And only with hot exposures. I was shooting a woman at sunrise in a field of tall grass with morning light spilling round her. Also when I shot a child with a balloon against a huge water fountain. On both I was even F-16 but with super speeds. It seems when there is a lot of light and information to be captured by either the drive or the sensor through fast lenses, the error happens. I never get the error with slower lenses (Cooke 2.8 or Angenieux zooms or the RED lenses. To clear the error message and reshoot just use the exit button and go with less light. Definitely an issue the RED folks need to address. Hope this helps.

I'd like to see David's camera LOG file, but this statement is inconsistent with every data point we have seen so far.

So I wouldn't assume too much. Issues with green screen and codec errors on playback were addressed at Build 20, if you are still seeing them it suggests to me you may be recording to a RED-DRIVE and it needs inspecting, or if its to a CF card you may have a different system level issue.

A camera LOG file sent to RED tech support with a complete description of the issue you are seeing s always the best first step to a solution.

Hey, David. Good to see you in these parts. :-)

Stuart-This issue is real. We had the same thing happen to us and now that I think about it and read David's post, we had a bright window blown out in the background of our shot when we had that error. I do NOT think this is a drive error. If we have time, we'll try to replicate and send a log, but I'm not sure when we can get to that.

*Just to be clear: This is NOT the Sata error you mentioned in the other thread. This says "Codec error" and the camera is locked up until you restart.

All I'm saying is if you are seeing faults recording to RED-DRIVE but not CF, you should schedule your RED-DRIVE for inspection with RED tech support.

Of course we always welcome test data, so as unlikely as scene highlights may be to a cause a codec error during record, you never know....

If we have time, we'll try to test with drives and cards. Again, I don't think it's a drive issue, but who knows? I do know that we have 2 harddrives from I think the same batch (purchased and shipped at the same time) and once we took one off and re-started, the other worked fine.

We'll try to replicate this week and send you a log. But as you know, intermittent issues are very hard to replicate and of course, fix.

Hey Kevin. I don't believe it's drive related either. Just too much to digest with fast glass. Did you get your error using the new RED primes? I've learned to dodge the bullet with exposures and ISO, but if I come up with any more criteria I'll pass it on to you and Stuart.
