In Review: Cinematography For Directors

Cinematography For Directors by Jacqueline B. Frost, published by Michael Wiese Productions.

"
There are just a handful of directors who have the will to not only wrangle actors but work behind the lens.
James Cameron and Ridley Scott often operate their own cameras, but they also work alongside top-notch cinematographers on their projects,
as did Stanley Kubrick. Steven Soderberg and Robert Rodriguez are among the few who try to “do it all,” but, of course,
they also have the budgets (and smarts) to hire a talented gaffer and electrics team.

...

Frost wisely avoids drawing her own conclusions about such key issues as defining the director-cinematographer relationship,
instead calling on veteran directors and cinematographers to discuss their own experiences, including Roger Deakins, ASC,
Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, Richard Crudo, ASC, John Baily, ASC, Donald Petrie and Ang Lee.
All have interesting perspectives, which Frost carefully weaves together."

beyond budget

beyond budget

And beyond budget, what experiences are out there, that crave for uncertainty, that search for the possibility of failure as the same path for renewal?
I´m really interested in this times where we can dodge repeating ourselves, but fall short of trying beyond our skills!? is cinematography possible beyond knowledge? Can accident stop being seen as such? Can success be misunderstood?

If that was shorter it could have been Haiku.

I've just got the book.

Great reading.

Stanley Kubrick

"Perhaps it sounds ridiculous,

but the best thing that young filmmakers

should do is to get hold of a camera

and some film and make a movie of any kind at all."

the hope

the hope

I hope we'll all be young filmmakers, when blind and smelling carpets.

Funny I got that book tonight for my boy, he is 15 and
shoots with the RED, he often shoots with #21 and once
or twice shoots with #18 during the summer.
I was looking at it at Borders Bookstore and it was a great
browsing of a book. So I got it.

First glance I thought that was Salmon Rushdie!!

Good quote though!!

Michael Wiese is a smart guy with a good soul and publishes an excellent selection of books.

...he also has a horde of Script Consultants which are great to work with.

Jackie is a great person, super instructor at UCLA's Continuing Education Entertainment Studies Dept and the book covers what you need to know in a logical presentation. I've taken her class and recommend it without reservation. Ditto the book. Of all the UCLA instructors, Jackie provided the most handouts, atayed later to ask questions, and answered any question, regardless of how off the wall it may have been.
