I shot some music video footage in the desert. And I remember that a few weeks before, another user commented about a vertical line problem (a thin vertical line going through the center of the image) after he did a black shading calibration. I had a feeling that I might run into this problem after doing the black shading calibration and it did! I didn't have a problem with the rest of my footage (that I've seen so far). It's funny because when I open up the same file in RedAlert and color correct it, it doesn't show the line. But when I render it out to ProRes HQ Debayer Half High, it shows the line clearly through the center. That leads me to believe that this problem can be fixed in post. Is it possible?

Red Team. Please help! Thanks. I need the shot - can't have it ruined.

That was I David who posted about the black line through frame. I belive thy fixed it in post by either cutting and moving or painting. It was on a major big name commercial and they wanted that shot. I would love to know the original cause.

I had this problem on my camera aswell. I uploaded the images to the red technical team and they told me that this is probably due to a fan issue. Shooting with the fan on Auto and keeping the camera rolling for long takes starves the camera from its air ventilation.

They also went on to say " I understand why people shoot the camera with the fan on auto but they
have to understand that if you put it on HOT or another setting other
than AUTO or VARIABLE the fan noise will be there but it will be a
constant pitch that is easy to extract in post. It is the same
practice you would have to go through to extract the sound of film
passing through the gate (if you were using a film camera)"

I hope this helps you guys. If you have any more issues contact the tech team. They are always very helpful.

And what build was the camera that you were using?

And also, I did not roll the camera for a long time. It was a short take (less than a minute). And the temperature was not hot either.

I think that it is not the fan, but some other issue.

I'm having a similar really strange issue. I have a line which appears in the image, through the viewfinder or the lcd monitor... it doesn't seem to be a thing of cable or screen. But strangely when I checked the footage with redcine-x and red alert... i see no line over there.
Any idea of that can be happening?

Build 21...
(planning on moving back to 20).

Note: I sent the camera back to Red for inspection. They were extremely helpful, however, they had the camera in for a few weeks but couldn't emulate the issue (they even put it through a temperature chamber). Without emulating the issue, they couldn't assess the problem, and the camera was sent back to me. I haven't yet re-experienced the problem, but I'm sure I will sooner or later. My plan is to shoot hours and hours of footage in different temperature conditions and see if I can get the same problem again. I thought perhaps that it would be a build issue. I'm not really sure.

Hi just shot a documentary where the happenings were unique. No way to reproduce twice. Guess what? Red One (built 20) decided to shoot with a nice black vertical line in the middle of the shot. After few hour in the editing room I found that the line is not just a black line, is a shift (of about 4 pixels wide vertical line) from the left side of the frame that is now placed in the middle of my shots. There is more. The 4 pixel wide line that should have been in the middle of the frame took the place of the one coming from the extreme left side of it.
I'm pissed!
Please, help

Hello Luca,

Would you please send a still image of a problem frame to: sean at red dot com
And we will investigate further from there. Thanks

I had a "new-to-RED" DP in last week doing some color chart tests and false color familiarization (so to speak) in prep for the short film we're shooting over the next 2 weeks.

One of her clips had the vertical line enigma pop up. I wasn't around her when she was recording, but took a look at the CF card after the color grader at the post house called me up and explained the appearance of the line. We could both see it (at separate locations) when the clip was opened on HD monitor with REDCine, but it is not apparent on the EVF or on board Monitor.

Conditions:
The card was shot to its full capacity (just under 16GB)(What is the common knowledge on shooting the cards all the way till they cut off?).
The 4th(second to last) clip was only 2 frames: why? I don't know. But it looked like a recording error must've happened because the frames are all digi-wierd pixels misplaced etc. And then the vertical line, down the middle of the frame appeared on the 5th clip(last on the card), however it seemed that when she stood up to cut the recording, her black shirt had the line disappear.

What can I do to calm them(her and the post guys) down by saying that I have work-arounds, or that there are post-solutions if this should pop up when we're rolling through loads of footage with a hamster and a 8 year old and might need that very precise moment in the recording?

The camera is running B20.1.6 and have done my black shade calibrating upon firmware update this past fall. Should I do another calibration once we're on set, in order to say that that's covered?

I also know I had recently switched over to SILENT fan mode earlier last week, just before she did the tests. So maybe I'll switch back to AUTO or VARIABLE.

Any news/suggestions would be awesome.
