Hi,

I'm from Belgium and one of our latest movies (which hasn't been shown here yet, I've read somewhere we'll have to wait untill the 7th of october) is selected in Cannes for the 'Quinzaine des Réalisateurs' section.
(English Title: The Misfortunates)

It's based upon a acclaimed (and a bit autobiographical) Belgian novel about a 13 year old boy growing up in a pretty marginal family with his 3 uncles that have multiple problems, despite their best intentions. The book (and movie) is about if the boy can escape 'his destiny'.
If he can escape from that, while keeping his love for his uncles.

After in 2005 talking to people in the film academy in Belgium about the first ideas about the RED camera, people laughed at me.
Now one of our most anticipated movies here is shot entirely on RED.

PS: I've read that reactions in Cannes were very positive, and the actors and director drove naked on bicycles in Cannes as a promotion stunt.

Piece of the Review by Variety:

"Ace d.p. Ruben Impens fully exploits the possibilities of his Red One digital camera, evoking everything from saturated film stock to playful black-and-white to crystalline contempo lensing."

Another piece of a review by Eternal Sunshine of the Logical Mind:

"The audience found a great deal of things to like about the film itself, though, and it got some of the most positive walking-out-of-the-theatre buzz that I heard the entire festival."

The movie has also been chosen as Belgian movie to send to the oscars.

Critics in Belgium have been giving it raving reviews, btw.
PS: @ Fraisse: I don't have a RED camera, I just wanted to report this.

Best regards,

Congratulations to the filmmakers. Some great press buzz happening there. The trailer already has me hooked and I'm hoping 'The Misfortunates' makes its way to our shores in the future, either in cinemas or DVD.

Matthieu, is there a trailer with English subtitles, cause that would add more meaning to the images. Although I hope the subtitles would be better than the translation of the title, which I understand to be "The Misfortunates"; nothing as good as "De helaasheid der dingen".

Mathieu, any idea as to what lenses they used?

The trailer has some really stunning images. They have the filmic quality I love. Anyway, I love the look. And would love some information on how it was filmed, with what lenses, and how it was color corrected. Obviously this is a lot to ask. No worries if you can't find it. Just curious.

I don't know, but I know a director of this movie:

This is a more recent movie, also shot on RED, by the same DOP.
Maybe I can ask the director if he can ask the DOP.

I know the DOP really likes RED and shoots a lot with it.

Ibloom: I've heard a couple of times about the bar, but I've never been there. Will check it out.

Thanks

Awesome, that'd be great! I'd just love to know what lenses they used.
