I'm editing my first project from the red one. I've used clipfinder to import the files into FCP and everything has worked great so far. My question is this: Do I send the project to color now or do I send the project back to clipfinder to render, and then send it to color? Also I need to add some simple smoke effects. Do I do this now with the low res proxies, or do it after I have a high quality render?

Thanks in advance, I know this is a very noob post.

It is best to send either quicktime reference files (proxies) or wrapped quicktimes (created through log & transfer) to Color.
Color can then access the R3D file and work with the full bit depth.
Effects should to be added after you have rendered in Color.

Cheers,
Hans

Hans - I have just noticed your signature, which may answer my clipfinder question?

I really like the look of your software, and am hoping to use it for my red Avid workflow.....
....but it is crashing on me constantly and I have yet to successfully render a single clip.
I tried 2.1 but it was lacking the Avid tools. I have tried 2.2 v 5 and v7 with no success.
I am using a Mac Pro DX3Ghz with OS 10.5.4, Red Alert 20.1.6, and Redcode QT codec v3.8.
Could it be my OS version that is causing the problem?

EDIT: Apparently not! just upgraded OS and still unable to render out any kind of clip and then program crashed :(.
Any advice appreciated.

PS what is the "go" column for in the clip view window?

Hans, We have just started using Clipfinder, and have run into a problem.
When we Render ProRes 422HQ 1080p out of Clipfinder, then import into Final Cut Pro 7, the clips look lighter.
We calibrate our Cinema Display to Gamma 2.2 / D6500 / lum120, with Eye-One, as we've always done for still photography work. We've tried that FCP compatibility pref in QuickTime Player, and it only shows a difference on movies rendered OUT from FCP.
How can we get consistent color/gamma from Clipfinder to Final Cut Pro??

When you say "lighter", what are you comparing the rendered clip to ?
I assume you're on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).
In that case you are probably dealing with the dreaded gamma issue.
Rendering from Clipfinder should be no different than rendering from REDAlert or REDrushes then.
The problem will go away once you upgrade to Snow Leopard.
As an imperfect workaround, you may want to try setting "contrast adjustment" in the render settings to 0.3.

Cheers,
Hans

Thanks Hans,
Both of your suggestions worked, and now on Snow Leopard, the ClipFinder to FCP work-flow has consistent gamma.

I'm having some issues with it today.. any help appreciated.

I normally get a 2k/4k ProRes sequence from editorial, reconnect to R3D or H in Clipfinder.. import XML to Color.. work with R3D footage.

For some reason the stuff I am working with in Color after using clipfinder is half/quarter resolution and renders out this way... the R3D footage is 4k.. I've tried connecting it to the F proxy.. still only 1/4th the size in Color.. and will only allow me to render out this 1/4 size centered image... help!

I guess want everything to show up full size in Color and allow me to render out this way.. which I have done successfully before. Not sure what I am missing this time.

Most likely editorial scaled the clips in FCP, e.g. to fit a 2048x1024 H-proxy or transcoded clip into a 1024x512 sequence.

In that case you'll need to rescale in the geometry room in Color.

Hans

I was afraid it was that simple!

I did the resize in geometry and it worked.. unfortunately they scaled the clips arbitrarily so I had to resize each one by hand.

IN the geometry room you can apply to all clips or apply to selected.
