As some here may remember, I was one of the Executive Producers for an award-winning wildlife documentary that aired earlier this year on National Geographic Channel. The program is titled "Icy Killers". It will air for the fifth time this year on October 3 (Saturday) at 5pm and 8pm Eastern (check local listings) on National Geographic Channel. In checking the listings for Pacific Time, I see it is airing at 5pm and 8pm.

The central figure of the show is the extremely-fast swimming Salmon Shark, a smaller cousin of the Great White Shark. Tons of other wildlife are also featured - orcas, whales, bears, seals, and many more.

We put camera crews in the air, on boats, and underwater for this production. Aerial Cineflex and boat Cineflex was shot using a Sony HDC1500. Underwater and a lot of the land based footage was shot using RED One.

The show has done very well on the awards circuit, winning a Cine Golden Eagle Award, Finalist in Cinematography at the Blue Ocean Film Festival, and four Telly Awards - two silver and two bronze for various iterations of the trailers for the program.

If you haven't seen the show, and like exciting, high production value wildlife documentaries, check it out!

This was a great show Steve... I hadn't even heard of Salmon Sharks before... and they are nasty... love it and the underwater footy was extraordinary... kudos!

Thanks Tim! I'm very happy with how the program turned out...

Wildlife documentaries are always full of special challenges - but that's what makes them so rewarding in a professional sense. There are so many variables to deal with in that type of program - technology, weather, transporting equipment, animal behavior, chronic fatigue, communications challenges, geography, just to name a few.

We've had nothing but good reviews and reports on the program.

Of all the genres of subject matter I work in, wildlife, adventure travel, alternative sports, and nature are my very favorite. Those have always been integral to my lifestyle - and somehow along the line I figured out how to make a living documenting those important parts of my lifestyle. :)

Congrats Gibby,

I just saw this fascinating video trailer.

Hopefully is going to be soon available on NG Blu-ray collection that I can see it at the full picture quality.

Thanks Sanjin...glad you liked the trailer. I'm not sure when the BluRay and DVD will be released...hopefully sometime soon! The footage in this show is stunning, so I think BluRay would really do it justice.

Steve,

Great stuff thanks for posting!

"Icy Killers" aired this past Saturday twice in the USA on National Geographic Channel. That was the 5th and 6th time the program has aired on Nat Geo since March 21. I understand the program has also been airing in syndication in various other areas of the world - Germany, Canada, Asia, etc.

I believe the DVD of the program will shortly be available.

As one of the executive producers, I was just one contributor on a very talented and dedicated team for this production. It was a pleasure to be involved with the program and crew.

In my opinion, the world seriously needs many more blue chip, good production values wildlife and natural world documentaries (like "Icy Killers") to counterbalance all the garbage reality programs I continually see on television. Just saying...

You know, Gibby, I don't want to rain on your parade, but shows are repeated on cable broadcasts all the time. It's how they fill all that air time. And as the past president of the Cine organization (famous for the Cine Golden Eagles) I'd remind you that that particular little statue is no rare beast in awards cabinets across the nation.

And I don't mind a little self-promotion here and there, but you might want to turn the volume down a little.

Rob,

There's no call for a post from you like that. This is a "Shot on Red" forum, established as a place for members to post info about their productions, including when they might be screening and airing. There are members here who are interested in watching programs shot on RED, and announcing a re-airing gives them a heads up in case they want to watch the show. If you're not interested in the info, just pass on by, rather than post jabs at someone who started the thread.

This isn't the first time you've come after me with your wise cracks. You say "I don't want to rain on your parade", but actually I believe that is exactly what you intended to do.

You give a "Modesty is my best quality" slogan at the bottom of your post - and in the same post brag about being the past president of the Cine organization? I view the Cine Golden Eagle Award as a nice award, as are the other awards this program has received. There will certainly be a lot more awards for this program. As an annual judge for multiple national Emmy Awards competitions (Prime Time, Sports, Daytime), that's a very educated opinion. That's not spoken in immodesty, but merely to counter-balance your comments.

Awards aren't ego exercises - they're simply ways of validating your quality work and marketing your services through getting the word out.

Self promotion is basic to any business, and the motion media business is no exception. Everyone here should be self promoting their business - if they don't, then they really don't understand how this business works.

Now, I've been a member of RED User since day one, Jarred and RED Team are very good friends of mine. I used to be a moderator for RED User, this isn't the first time you've taken an unwarranted poke at me, and I'm not in any mood to put up with any personal attacks from you. So...I'd suggest you just go on your way, leave this thread, and refrain from any more personal attacks on me looking forward.

Rob,

There's no call for a post from you like that...

Yeah... not sure the point of your post myself, Rob... Do you just have some sort of personal axe to grind or did you consider that this was actually a valuable contribution to this thread?

That was a rhetorical question by the way. Regardless, I'm going to have to ask you to "turn the volume down a little". If you can't, or won't, please consider this your only warning. People who act like they are more interested in acting like trolls than they are contributing something of use to the thread don't get a very friendly reception from me. Please let the man share his work in peace.

Thanks.

later,
Jason

Thanks Rob. Let's let this be water under the bridge so to speak. I respect you and your work - in fact I try hard to respect everyone's work. I think everyone here just needs to celebrate the diversity of approaches to production that RED One has enabled - and the even greater diversity that Epic and Scarlet will foster.

RED User is a great home base for all of us - and there's room for everyone. In any community there are bound to be differences. Lets all just celebrate our differences - and that will actually make this community stronger.

An achievement for anyone here is actually an achievement for the whole RED community...

Peace...
