From Engadget:

Set to debut at CEATEC next week, the HFR Comfort-3D records at 240 fps through just one lens instead of two thanks to a new half-mirror system that takes left and right eye images at the same time, better for capturing fast motion and providing viewers lacking polarized glasses a 2D picture with minimal blurring.

Sorry if this has been posted before, I couldn't find it on Reduser yet

Pretty cool, I imagine it is very expensive and needs some expensive recording system. Probably first use will be for something in sports where they are already using super slo mo and this will give a 3d aspect.

No reason RED couldn't do something similar fairly inexpensively.

How do you get depth perception and interocular separation from a single lens perspective?

Same question here...

It could be possible if the image circle is soooo big that it could cover the intra-eye space and both sensor.

?

Patrick

PS: on the drawing it seams that the intra-eye is a fixed distance...or perhaps is it on moving mirrors...?

3D has been playing Key importance in the recent Sony deals for Digital Cinema expansion on a global scale specifically for converting Screens to Digital 4K and 3D, during the recent researches fro KETCHFRAME reopening to sport a full 4K and 3D screening and editing room we talked extensively with some industry heavy players and the multi Billion dollar global agreement headed by Sony shows how serious they are about 4K and 3D digital media and how strongly they believe to the future of Digital, they also announced that they will be making much of their feature films in 4K and push strongly to production of 3D as well to support their deals with Cinema Theater chains every were and especially in the US were Regal and AMC two of the world largest, will convert their entire circuits to 4K, that will be more then 11,000 screens with two companies and just in their US territories, , so this Camera is just but the beginning.

For KETCHFRAME we are looking in to the 4K sony SXRD system with an additional 3D lens adaptor in collaboration with realD for the installation of the system in our studio in Vegas, and even so this camera to me does not have the control as the camera used by Cameron on Avatar, the Pace's camera with motorized Inter-Ocular distance adjustability for playing with DOF and Focus in scene composition, I do believe that this fixed design will have its challenges but it also brings an interesting new toy to the field, will see what more Sony does have in its sleeves but prepare to be impressed on their new upcoming 4K and 3D technologies all around from capture to Projection, I have seen some of it and I was impressed.

Some patents must have just run out. About ten years ago we were working with a company trying to commercialize this single lens stereo, for more than just endoscopes/borescopes. It is fantastic for macro work. The rest of this post is all from memory, so it is subject to inaccuracy.

The limitation is that the stereo separation is something like 1/2 the diameter of the front optic. The "entrance pupil" in the diagram should actually be plural, as there are actually two pupils, as this is where the stereo separation is generated (think "shift" lens). This configuration has the result of limiting the f/number of the system.

Ketch, what cameras will Sony be using to shoot their 4K digital features?

If you have access to a medium format camera with a waist-level finder you will be able to see the scene in 3D even with a single lens. If you blink with one eye at a time you can see the parallax shift.
With the two sensors separated just like your eyes that's where you introduce the interocular distance between left and right eye.

As Ace put it: "Crazy smart"

So what's the time frame for the Birger EOS single lens 3d splitter and how much is the deposit? I see a Birger EOS mount, attached to a splitter, with an FFD adjusting optic, all on a pl mount (maybe EF too?)? Thanksgiving is coming up quickly, don't we need one of these?:

"In honor of Black Friday, the largest shopping day of the year in the US, the Birger Engineering {...single lens 3d splitter....} for the ....... Camera are now available for reservation. Download forms at:"

Tom, as you can imagine they have the budget to shoot with the high end stuff, of which I currently favor the Pace system, but Sony is definitely going to push their product line as much as possible, but each of their films that will be given to third party production companies and or directed and produced bin a n out source style will possibly decide on the gear to use for the filming based on their individual experience, as far as they can provide Sony with the results they are looking for, but it is off curse to be expected that Sony will push their new cameras as well as the ones already in use for every project they will be financing.

I believe they will make a serious entry with this first unit, and they will strongly support it.

I love their new 3D lens adaptor for the 4K SXRD projector, simply genius, and be able to project true 2K 3D full blast at the highest resolution available.

Is Sony planning to shoot their 4K pictures on film and scan it? I mean they don't have a 4K digital camera yet.

Ok... I'm still confused... is this taking the physics of 3d over my head? I thought the separation distance and convergence point of two lenses determined how dramatic the 3D effect would appear. How can you do this with one lens/?

i see two problems

1) it doesnt seem that you can change the parallax distance depending on your subject matter and composition

2) seems like an awful lot of glass between the sensor(s) and subject, especially if we are meant to believe that this is basically a medium format optical system.

Correct you are Ryan in the assumption of the Dramatic effect produced by playing with the interocular distance, as well as the divergence, which changes the plane of were the focus lends.

This camera does have two lenses inside of it, and it has one output lens mount, it is accomplished in the same way you do with traditional "L" shaped S3D rigs, such as the one from ET, here the mirrowrs play the same effect, but in a traditional Stereo configuration set up, well in truth nothing is traditional about the design of this camera but you get the idea.

As far as been able to adjust the internal lenses there is obviously no room for that, but will have to see if Sony was capable to implement some kind of computerized electronic Mirror movements, way too early to tell, but when I go to get my demo of the new SXRD 4K projector and the S3D lens Mount Adaptor, which btw, will be the first to allow True full 2K play back per lens, meaning it will utilized the full 4K resolution of the Projector as well of that of my RED's images.
