Hello I am new to this cinematography and camera world. I have a 5 min footage which was filmed on red camera. I am trying to play it on my laptop on Quicktime player. But I understood that it doesn't have those codecs needed to play it. Can anyone help me go through the step by step process to play this video. I appreciate your help.

Thanks,
rmp

Hello and welcome to the forum. All you have to do to play back the file on your computer is download the redcode CODEC from the support page.

http://www.red.com/support
It's close to the bottom.

You can also download Red Alert or RedCine and transcode it to a MOV or other format. (I would recommend this) While in the app you can tweak settings to make the image look better.

What kind of computer are you using? Mac or PC

This should get you started.

Also, contact a moderator to have your user name changed to your name (forum rules)

I am using a PC. Oh.. I thought that we can use hidden names to maintain privacy. But anyways I will change my name and follow the rules

Hello Curtis

I downloaded REDCINE and installed it on my PC. I imported the raw footage but I don't see it loading.I am rather first time using this interface. I am using a PC with display settings 1200 x 800. I just need to see my 2 min video on my laptop without any editing/coloring requirements.

Thanks for your help.

macs are best for handling red footage. you just need to select the folder that is the roll ie A001, then all the clips withing the folder should load. select new project, then open all, then the folder containing the roll.

unless you have a really fast pc its not going to play back real time, and if you set the camera to generate QT reference files, they would be the best way to preview the footage. again you will need the codex from the support page

please contact a mod to change you name to your real name. ty

If it's a pc you may not have enough processing power/gpu power if you're using red alert. I've never used it on a pc before but it could be a combination of all those things and maybe even you're drives rpm speed.

Casey makes a good point.
If you have access to a mac or know someone who does I would transcode it to a quicktime at a lower resolution. Then you should be able to watch it on your laptop. I didn't realize the Quicktime Codec wasn't supported on the PC.

hello friends, thanks a lot for your responses. I tried to play these raw files on Mac by installing a REDCINE but when I am trying to import the files they don't show up. Here are the steps I am following

check - Project
go to Import section and select - Load shot (a new interface opens)
then when i navigate to the folder nothing shows up. But when select all files instead of (*.R3D) they show and when I select my video then nothing happens.

My files have extension .

Those are the camera generated proxies, they get their information from the R3D file.

There should be a file in there that reads

A005_C001_0405D7_001.R3D

That is the file that you want to open with REDCINE.

This is how the file structure should look.

If the R3D is not there then you do not have the footage.
