..The primary differences between Redspace/Rec709 and Red RAW.

I know that color space defines the number of colors that can be faithfully reproduced and created. But that's about the extent of my knowledge. Does changing color space dramatically effect any aspects of the image? Highlights/shadow detail ect? Why would you want to change your color space? Is Rec709 simply "HD Tv broadcast legal" or what?

I just need some of the more informed people here to clarify/explain this for me, even if in just a few words. :001_unsure:

What you are asking about is look up tables aka LUT. These define the hues and their luma of colour in specific systems.
In answer to your questions:

By changing between different LUTs the parameters of specific colours are reassigned to different values in the new LUT. These new values are ensured to fit with in the restrictions of the system the LUT is designed for. As a result the colours and luma change so yes you may notice a change in detail and colour depending on what LUT you change to.

If the footage is broadcast in HD it will as part of the process be changed to fit with in the REC709 LUT. If the colours and luma of the footage already fit with in the values of the LUT then very few changes will be noticed once broadcast. If the colour in the footage does not fit with in the values of the LUT then it may well look different upon broadcast. So you do want to change to the LUT you eventually will deliver in. Preferably this change will happen from the raw footage, as this will minimize quality loss.

REC709 is a 3D LUT.

Not RED specific but does a good job explaining LUTs and what they are for. Understanding how they relate to RAW is critical to getting images out of RED looking the way you expect them to.
