This is a win win proposal. I'm RED #87 holder. My proposal is simple. if you have a feature coming up, or want to be one of the first ones with Epic-X in your hand, this might be a steal for you.

When the first RED 1's where out, they were renting at 1,500 per day- 3,500 p/week.

When Epics come out, they'll probably be renting 2,000 per day- 6,000 p/week. If that likely scenario were to repeat- if you subrented for 3 weeks you could make your 4 month rental back in 3 weeks.

I'm pretty sure most are confident Epic-X will be released prior to February. The sooner it would be released the greater the deal would be for you. 20 weeks of current gear rental and/or upgrade to Epic-X for $20,000 US- your rental price. I would use 20k worth to upgrade to Epic-X of your desire. 10,500 would be for the trade in, then 9,500 for let's say new recording medium, bomb evf, or whatever you would want that 9,500 towards.

The win for me would be, I would upgrade towards the Epic-X at no additional cost for me.

The win for you, locking in one of the first Epic-X,with O'conner 2060HD, FF4, RPP's at 1k per week- for your personal use, or for sub-rental.

If the Epic-X does not come out- your still getting a good rate, and I would make sure you would have access to the Epic-X when it's first released to me at the 1k rate per week for up to 20 weeks if you desire, or a shorter period.

I guess I'm confused. Why wouldn't you just upgrade the camera yourself, then get your money back on the $2000/day rental price? For $20,000, why wouldn't someone just buy a Scarlet package for their project? Most productions don't require over 24fps anyways.

I apologize if I am misunderstanding the situation. It may be a good deal and I'm just not seeing it.

it seems that the selling point is his low SN# thus an earlier chance to shoot with EPIC-X should you not have access to an earlier number for sub-rental or don't want to buy anything outright.

By my back-of-the-envelope calculations (see zipped Excel file below), Vlad you COULD be giving up a good amount of money by doing this deal. Say if your kits sub-rent at the amounts you say, your other party makes $13K in PROFIT. However if things sub-rent at below market levels, your other party could lose $4K. It all depends how many weeks per month they can sub-rent, at what rate, and when the Epic X will be released.

Below are my pricing assumptions (short of making a full-fledged option-pricing model).

The only thing I can derive out of this is that Vlad you are pretty pessimistic that the EPIC-X will be available any time soon, and/or that the rental market is going to be worse than expected down the road. Otherwise, it makes sense for you Vlad to just keep the R1 and EX.

I see. But if the Epic will in fact bring in $6000/week, why not just rent it out and get the $20,000 back in 3.5 weeks instead of 20?

Because many of us don't have the rental clientele that say a rental house does, or a feature project in the works. So we can't guarantee that.

It is basically like selling options or futures contracts.

Bird in the hand worth two in the bush.
I'm #206 and would consider doing something like this myself.

Right. So this is based on the assumption that seller (vlad) of this option contract cannot obtain such rental fees on his own, while also selling the option that Epic-X will be released before Feb. This is a pretty bespoke deal and needs to be valuated based on the buyer's (you) own set of pricing assumptions (e.g. EPIC date probability distribution, weeks of sub-rental (less upgrade time), amount of sub-rental, etc).

Yousuf,

Thanks for your detailed spreadsheet and feedback.

Michael was correct on one main point of consideration- I don't have as deep pocketed clientele as some others do, but my major reason for putting this offer out was that I will be absent for a good chunk of time on previously scheduled engagements, and have found remote negotiations without being present to check gear out and check gear in less than ideal. I'd rather have it out for a reasonable price once than have it go out several times for a greater profit, in my absence due to the increased stress associated with that.

Thanks to all who contributed to this discussion.

I am ending this offer as I have agreed to a better term for myself and the other party that involves less than half the time, and expires when I'll be in town for a few weeks, and doesn't have the Epic-X as the main selling point.

I have a bridge for sale.

;)

A post like that after I gave you a ride at NAB.

I've seen plenty of threads become running jokes. I'd like to avoid that.

BTW- I didn't see you at the last NAB, at Steve's Reduser event- it was better than the prior year.
