  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Viewfinder

I have been shooting TVC, musicvideos and features on 35mm film for 20 years and find ALL of the things you mention easier to judge on a 20 inch HD monitor connected to a RED. Not a big fan of the EVF. I use it when I must, but prefer the 7" onboard.

I wonder how all the other professional DPs shot their movies on the RedOne with that "appalling" EVF...

Obviously they're all thrilled with the EVF, hence the development of the OVF

Whatever, they're happy, you're happy, and now I'm happy

Well from what I heard they are still deciding if the OVF is made... hope for you they will...

Well for me it'll make little difference as there are alternatives, my hope is for RED that they will follow though on the announcement. i know many many people that will commit to Epic if this goes through, assuming the OVF is up to the job. The more people that adapt to a system the better the end product will become and the easier my job will be. An OVF will mean that RED is a serious contender in my arsenal of equipment options, which currently its not. There are reasons to choose RED of course, but on a level playing field its way down the list.

I get the impression that many people regard an OVF as a retrograde step. If you still have the option of working from an EVF or a monitor .....how come the resistance?

Yes, but if you read that thread closely:

Our OVF will use a spinning mirror (not a prism) in a completely new way. While we think the new concept is quite unique, the things we are concerned with are:

1. The expense of development
2. The low volume of sales
3. The high price we would need to charge (excess of $20K) to work within our modular system
4. Maintenance
5. Its inability to view and focus in low light
6. In ability to add a viewing LUT.

One of the things we have talked about is just to drop development and let those who need an OVF buy another camera brand. But then they lose the value of being in the RED modular system... and 5K at 100fps.

We would love to hear your thoughts.

Jim

I'm not saying anything on the pros and cons of an OVF over an EVF. I just say it is discussed here largely by many people (as you will read if you actually care what other people write here) with a more, let's say, constructive attitude...

....and discussed outside of REDworld by many more who would adopt the system in a heartbeat should it include an OVF.

How is my 'attitude' not 'constructive' when I want the system to appeal to many more people?

Tony Brown,

How many people do you think would not buy a RED, EPIC or SCARLET because it doesn't come with a OVF? They have sold 7000 RED's as is so do you think it would be in the thousands? Maybe if you started a petition on this site you could get a count. That count could reflect weather they put the time and money into it.

For everyone else, this got me thinking. I was wondering how many Arri 235, 435 and 535 have been sold over the years? Just a question to get an understanding of the numbers out there. Maybe that info from Arri is impossible to find out.

Hey! Hey! All this trash talking about the Triumph TR-6 is offensive to me. I actually own a Pimento RED TR-6, and, believe it or not, it is my daily driver! And guess what? It works just great and is an awful lot of fun to drive.

:-)

I too have visual issues with the EVF, sometimes worse than others. I suspect that my brain's internal clock speed is somehow different than most people's. But I have the same issues with a lot of fluorescent lights, too. I can see flicker strongly when no one else can. Personally, I hate it. Happily, the refresh on my Apple computers doesn't bother me at all, but I see some computers that are nothing but flicker to me.

I think it is something to do with the operators more than the equipment.

I'm sure RED have done their research, but yes it would at least double their sales. I have a part share in an Arri 3 and a 235, there is no way I'd buy a camera without an OVF, I'd certainly consider an Epic with one.

I'd bet 90%, maybe more,of people shooting Features and Commercials would opt for the OVF, the rental houses will love it. I dont personally know anybody who would choose EVF given the choice.

Bet it doesn't have the original Lucas Injection then......
