OK, now I'm really confused. The original Scarlet 3K design was said to support a data rate of up to 100 MBps, presumably to accommodate reasonable compression at 120 fps. After the redesign, Redcode 42 was officially given as the top quality level. On ScarletUser Jim Jannard explained it as follows:RC 225 is a massive amount of data. Probably a ton of overkill. But will be useful when shooting 5K at 100fps.
Think data rate divided by frame rate.
Jim
This means that 42 MBps is Scarlet's top data rate. If RC 225 is overkill for the 5K Epic but useful at 100 fps (I presume to maintain reasonable compression rates), wouldn't a higher-than-42-MBps data rate be equally useful for the 3K at 120 fps? Why was the 100 MBps maximum rate dropped? Have the Redcode algorithms been so improved since April 2008 as to make 100 MBps unnecessary at 3K?Jannard said:The RED ONE has a current maximum of REDCODE 36.
REDCODE is a reference number to maximum data rate of the camera electronics. If you shoot higher frame rates, the data rate doesn't go higher than the maximum. Hence, a higher number REDCODE will do less compression at higher frame rates.
Despair not... features are being shot now on REDCODE 36. And a smaller sensor innately has less data rate so REDCODE 42 is a VERY good number for 2/3" Scarlet.
(snip)This means that 42 MBps is Scarlet's top data rate. If RC 225 is overkill for the 5K Epic but useful at 100 fps (I presume to maintain reasonable compression rates), wouldn't a higher-than-42-MBps data rate be equally useful for the 3K at 120 fps?
so is Redcode 42 only for 4.5k footage? is that why the bitrate increase? or does it benefit all aspect ratios? like will 4.5k look much worse if its shot at redcode 36
What kind of playback rates are you guys getting in REDAlert 21 on Mac OSX? I'm getting around 1-2 fps... is this normal?
See Shawn's tests...
Jim
Given the quality of RC28 vs. RC42, I am sure I will get some flack for asking this.Any chance we will see a REDCODE lossless mode for still pictures? (mathematically lossless)
Much higher data rate for stills at lower frame rates.
Jim
Tim,
I'm using a RAID. Have you tried Build 21 with RC42 and if so what kind of playback are you getting? I just want to have a clue of what normal playback rate is for RC42 especially on a system like mine. I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.1, Mac Pro Nehalem 8 core 2.93GHz with 6GB RAM and a RAID 0 scratch drive. The H Proxies are playing back at 12 fps in QuickTime 7.
Hi andrae, we have a very similar system. Will post results after tomorrows
tests... thanks for patience. Been crazy around here and havent had much time to test as we would like.
What RAID are you using? We have the new MA EVO 2K and its awesome
especially for the REDUSER price.
cheers
