Hello everybody,
I am buying a red camera and im new to this so i needed your help i was wondering what set of lenses i should get for shooting a feature film? im very confused and need some honest advise. Should i go for the RED primes or some other manufacter? :confused5:

Depends on alot of things.... but budget is certainly a factor too if you want to buy. you can get a set of 5 RPP´s for about the price of one Cooke s4 prime lens. UP is alittle cheaper but still much more expensive than RPP's - around 12000 euro pr lens - if I remember....

I have used Master Primes and Ultra Primes among others, I have to say that no matter the cost I have been a Master Prime fanboy, for more then one reason, and no other manufacturer, or even their own Ultra Primes stood near what I like about the MP's, off course the price is very stiff, at about 20 to 33k each!!

NOw there are just so many new choices on Cine Glass, it is really starting to get confusing, at list for those that do not posses the knowledge, choices are always good, especially when they also serve different markets as to their price range.

There are also various things to consider when purchasing glass:

- Image Quality Produced
- Build Quality
- Size and weight
- Price
- If you rent your gear, can they stand in to the General Professional Market?

To me all the above are requirements that the RED PRO PRIMES match and surpass, by far, any other manufacturer's Glass, including Zeiss, they are large and heavy glass, similar in size to the Master Primes, and this are very large Glass, especially on the wide angle side, the RPP and the RPZ line of glass from RED are just a fantastic evolution and revolution at the same time in Cine Glass, they are extremely Sharp, Built like a Tank, have a beautiful design, and make a wow factor on any set, but most importantly they work absolutely great with full interaction and integration with any professional grade piece of equipment in use on any production.

So you want the best glass, at the best price point, giving you the absolute best BANG for your BUCKS, while giving you fantastic image quality, and size and weight is not an issue, then with no hesitation I recommend the RED PRO PRIMES and RED PRO ZOOM 18-85, if you get disappointed by your purchase at any time I'll buy them back from you at purchase price!!

Coming from Ketch Rossi.... Id say go for the red primes!!!!! and buy me a lotus elise with the money you save:dita:

RPPs are arguably the best value for money.

But, as Ketch said, if you want the sharpest, non-brathing, fastest or the best selection, MPs are difficult to beat. It comes down to your budget and the purpose. Or, if you are a glassoholic, like I am.:emote_happyhappy:

Thanks for your feedback guys. I was wondering if you know if the zeiss ULTRA PRIME LENSES are backordered or not?
Red is out of the question now because they are back ordered for 2 months i cannot afford to wait that much time because i have much earlier projects to shoot.

That is really too bad you can get the RPP's in time:( then you should give Mitch from Abel a call, ask about the availability of the Zeiss UP. http://www.abelcine.com/store/home.php

Interestingly Cooke S5's seem to transmit more light than a competitors lens that claims to be faster.

Hi Stephen

Interesting!

Is this at the centre or a partial or whole frame average?

Was this independently established?

MP have very deep blacks and a even illumination. So I can only imaging a very casual test that might make the S5's look brighter. Can you shed any more light on the test?

Hi,

Some of the Zeiss Superspeeds are not as fast as claimed, I cant remember which 2 in the set.
I have seen issues with other lenses. If somebody could measure a set of RPP's that would be interesting.
The new Schneider lenses are all marked slightly differently, probably telling the truth T2, T2.1, T2.2. Getting all the lenses in a set to all be identical would be pretty clever, unless the iris restricts some light at the wide end.

The DP lit a scene using MP's wide open, when he switched to S5's the image was brighter. The S5's are T1.4 as opposed to T1.3. I don't know the focal length.

I feel everyone is getting hung up on the glass, yes of course the the different lenses have SUBTLE looks to them. But framing and lighting will have a far bigger impact than the lenses you use or for that matter the camera you use....surely
Learn to light and frame then you will have something that you can rely on the rest is dairy.
If you are incompetent it does not matter what you have to work with, if you know what you are doing you can create great images from a pinhole camera.

Lens handling is probably more important than anything else, if the first assistant is complaining about lens markings, it wastes a great deal of the DP's energy that can go into lighting.

Pinhole lenses wont help you shooting live action with a Red One, AFAIK the longest exposure is still 1 second....

Before spending an extra $60k to save two months, you should look into renting RPP while waiting. Chances are you will only spend a few grand, and will end up with $50k in your pocket.

why isn't anybody talking about the Unique Optics? Pretty closes to the RRPs, and there are sets available now.
