I was wondering if anyone knew how to get a simple EDL type list from FCP that states each clip name (and maybe in the order of use) that's used in a sequence.

When I use the export EDL, I get this massive document, with lots of info I don't need. I think it comes in at 155 page word doc.

I have a project in 720 prores that I'd like to online at 1080. I just want to re-export the clips I used--even if it's the entire clip, since I don't want to media manage or make sub-clips.

I don't mind doing it by hand. If I had a paper list I could just collect the clips and export, put them on a different drive, then re-link a copy of the project.

Thanks,
Chris

Please don't do it by hand. Instead use Clipfinder to rerender and reconform the sequence.
It is a great helper application for FCP based workflows.

You can find it here: http://www.daun.ch/software/

Thanks, that looks like a handy little app. Especially if it can reduce a 160 page EDL to a simple Excel doc. ( I'd like to find a free option first)

Clipfinder does exactly what you want and it's free- no reason to go handfed on this.

So in the end, at least for now, I feed CF an XML. CF generated this funky list which I copied into a word doc. I then broke the list into rough acts based on the clips used matched to the timeline.

I then manually created a CF session and dragged "Act 1" clips into it for tweaking.

Can I send the CF session to RedRushes or do I have to manually load them there as well?

Thanks,
Chris

You don't need to use RedRushes with Clipfinder. Use the render option in Clipfinder itself, which does everything RedRushes does and more.

Also, you do seem to be set on making extra work for yourself, by doing things manually. If you want to break the edit down into 'acts', then why not do that in FCP, and send one XML per act to Clipfinder – no Word or manual intervention required.

Thanks for the input. I still don't have my head wrapped around how to conform with CF. I transcoded my raw to Prores, and I'm not sure how to get an EDL or XML into CF so that CF then will point to my original red files.

The basic steps in your case are
- export XML from FCP
- in Clipfinder, select "Import clips from FCP XML" from the File menu and import the XML file
- To relink from the transcoded files to the originals, select "Replace MOV with R3D" and set "clip directories" to a directory that contains all required R3Ds
- it's probably a good idea to now save the Clipfinder document
- Render clips to 1080p
- Select "Run conform on FCP XML file" from the Tools menu and set "clip directories" to the directory that holds your 1080 transcodes.

Mail me if you need more info.

Cheers,
Hans
