  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New: Cinedeck/ Cineform Field Recorder/Monitor

That thing looks great. What I love about it, is not only could it be useful for some RED tasks, but I can take a camera like my little HV20 and turn it into something much more useful in a professional setting. It won't fix things like exposure lock, but it will improve the codec. Also, allows one stop shopping for any camera you may rent that provides HDMI/HD-SDI clean outputs. Hoping the monitor quality is top notch. That, along with some metering tools is great value. Throw in a computer as well, wow. If it does it all well, they may be onto something here.

This looks like a great addition to the Red Canon, not many responses ?

It's very cool, now I need two of them to record 3d from my canon HFS100s.

This looks like a great addition to the Red Canon, and a great idea, a recorder/player and monitor, makes great sense, I wish I thought of it. !!!.
In this environment it's great to see other companies innovating and following the Red lead, kudos and keep up the good work.
Till

5000 usd? + the cineform licence?

i wouldnt buy it, but rent it if needed.

Well, I for one, would love to use them for my EX-1s and HG20s and bypass in-camera compression and record to Cineform in 4:2:2, but I don't need a monitor, just the recorder box will do. I can imagine one of those boxes recording off the EX-1 inside a housing and how great that would be. I already wrote to Cinedeck asking if they would consider selling a stripped down model without monitoring, so let's see what they say...

Hi Cuneyt ! This is a small price to pay for a quality field recorder, once I have my footage recorded in Cineform thats it until output, no other format is needed.
Cineform is so user friendly I need no other DI. Just look at how much it costs to create a film out or rent a HD Can deck for one day. This recorder will pay for itself with one job.

...i wouldnt justify the price for myself...but i can think of 1000 things where this could be used.

---the HD Cam deck argument doesnt count..a close friend of mine has 3 of them...hehe

I have my eyes on two Scarlet FF35 and can say the Cinedeck will be top of my list,
Why? if reports are correct the monitor is good enough to focus HD, 2K and 4K footage, with playback, Waveform/ Histograms etc it saves me say 1,500 USD on the Red Monitor/Bomb plus it can record 2 hours 12bit 4:4:4 footage (Red 4K) then I don't have to purchase the Red Flash or Hard Disc modules saving me say 1,200 USD.
Cineform is a great codec and a quality DI so I am already saving a bundle on different formats and DI say 1,500 to 2,000 not to mention rentals etc and the fact it can be used with several different cameras and formats
This is why I think this is a fantastic development and will be a worthy investment into the future.
P.S. This is no reflection on the Red equipment which I have found to be excellent but just an exercise in economic reality. Anything that helps save a buck in the current climate is welcomed.

good point!
didnt see it that way.

but the red gives a 24p/25p 720p signal over HD SDI...no psf!
lets say epic gives 1080p...again theres a problem
and the waveform of this monitor is not directly getting access to the sensor...this only does the red evf and red lcd

I think this could be a hit for a lot of new HDSDI cams that have been releasing lately.

Keep in mind that Cineform is not recording the Raw data though and how do the clips retain RED metadata?

The 4:4:4 flavor is the good one, althought we don't know the price and delivery... Also there is a test somewhere on the forum with Cineform, Proress444 and Sheer lossless uncompressed... and the rank was:

1. Sheer lossless
2. Prores444
3. Cineform

For 422 a Ki-Pro is ok most of the time... since we still have the monitors, almost all of us.

Also since its data we still need all the backup copying onset thing... as you all know if you don't have data in three places they don't exist...

All the above is just my personal opinion...

Evangelos, It seem that test used a 4:2:2 mode of CineForm, as the testing engine of QuickTime Player, we simpler assume that tool is for 8-bit non-professional work. Testing would be better in AE where 16-bit pixels and 4:4:4(4) is at play. CineForm 444 is an RGB codec, unlike ProRES 444 which is YUV internally, so we will typically perform very well against it and all other lossy codecs.

On subject, we are very excited to have CineDeck coming to market.

FYI and shameless plug: We spoken with the guys at Cinedeck, and they will be providing us with a prototype so we can do an in-depth module on it. This will be included in the RED101DVD.com

Could someone please educate me a little more on this issue? Is this a limitation of Cinedeck?

Break it down for me.

Jay

Are you saying that Cinedeck cannot record this?

Jay

dont know somebody should test it, but according to their specs i would say no, 720p is 50 or higher and 1080p with 24/25 is psf
and even if you can record..you get the quick and dirty preview signal from the red.

This unit will be a big boon for working with the Phantom HD, eliminating the issues of the uber expensive phantom drives and the downloading times, the need for all the extra parts that not all rental houses stock. Just one use that comes to mind.

I wouldn't shoot the Red to this, IMHO... but it looks like a great camera mount monitor.

HD-SDI recorders

HD-SDI recorders

Keep in mind ...(an HD-SDI based recorder is) ... not recording the RAW data though and how do the clips retain RED metadata?

Any HD-SDI recorder will not duplicate the .R3D file, so they wouldn't have access to RED ONE metadata, only timecode and embedded audio.

However they can be a nice complement to your primary .R3D recording... also see www.aja.com/products/ki-pro/
