Hello to all,
I am curious as to how a tape based workflow works with the red.

An edit has been made within Avid Media Composer with material captured from Digital Beta tapes created by Technicolor. What would I do if I wanted to go back to the Raw R3D files for my color correction within Color? I am sure the TC would be fine within the clips, but what about the clip name? Is that retained some how within the tape transfer?

If anyone has any suggestions that would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Jesse

That all depends on how the ALE file was made that the captured material was digitized to. Look at the bin and check the clip names (if you changed them, you might be out of luck), the reel names (might be the same as the file names), and the Aux time code (which should be the original Red timecode). If those things are there, then you can do what you're asking. If they're not, it's going to be a much bigger job.

Thanks for the response,
I just spoke to the editor about all of this and it looks like TC wasnt even put on to the tape. So I guess the only option if they Really want to go back to the R3Ds is to re-edit...

A nice alternative to tape based color corrections are QT movies rendered by the colorist with cloned or continuous time code that mimics the source time code of the raw files. This is the first time I've heard of tape workflow in terms of Red. Looks like your going to need to eye match, or find the offline C mode EDL that relates to the transfer and go from there.

Yes that's correct but it's not really that tricky, just tedious. Make sure you get paid for the week or so it might take to do.

Yeah for sure Noah!

When I am involved in the process from the beginning I do normally work with only digital material, but unfortunately I was asked to come in and try to help them get back to there raw material after the edit had been made.

Thanks again for the feedback guys
