Okay, couldn't resist the inflammatory thread title. This feature, SUCK, was shot on RED, my RED. #98x. Since I received my camera almost 2 years ago I've been a Data Management Technician since day 1. It's been my prime occupation and it's served me well. I am very grateful to have been there from the beginning and to be a true RED ambassador. It my nearly 2 years of watching RED footage, as I believe it is part of my job to visually verify all takes (or circled takes for certain productions) I have never, ever seen such wonderful footage shot on RED. D. Gregor Hagey, the DP of SUCK, has been working with the RED one for as long as I have, and he's really become a master of how to work with the RED one.

Beyond that, the film is AMAZING. HILARIOUS. INTELLIGENT. Writer/Director Rob Stefaniuk is one of Canada's newest rising stars, and a great guy to boot. But don't take my word for it, find out what Iggy Pop thinks:

SUCK is having it's world premire at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The only thing that RED would ever make that would suck more than anything else would be a vacuum cleaner.

Interesting cast.

What lenses?

What was the post process on this one? Final Cut, Avid? Finishing system? Colorist?

hahaha awesome!!!

I've heard good things about this and can't wait to see it! Congrats!

Greame,

with all respect, please, leave that area to Mr. Dyson. He deserves the right to be the most "sucking" inventor in history. I love his products, his design, his approaches.

Real Name

indeed. just ask Brian Fairbanks.

Steve, I will send you info on the production and post when I'm off set. Unless Gregor chimes in before me!

I can verify that is his real name :)

Looks amazing Morning Glory. Congrats, and wish you all the best.

While I appreciate Morning's enthusiasm this is still a very small comedy (3.5M, 20 day shoot) with modest ambitions by Hollywood standards. I am quite happy with the results but my perfectionist side still sees things I'd like to change or do better the next time. Nonetheless Suck is quite funny and has a great soundtrack and some of the coolest cameos I've seen (the vegan Moby plays a hardcore singer that gets pelted with blood and raw meat). There's also some great stop motion animation by Neil Burns (with a little help from Method).

To answer Steve's question we had one set of Cooke S4s (from PS) that we shared between the A and B cameras, plus a Red 18-50 we used on the odd stedicam shot and an Angenieux 25-250 for one of the concert scenes. Deluxe transcoded our rushes with Red Rushes to 720p DVCProHD to be cut on a G5 FCP edit system. Deluxe did the conform with Quantel's Pablo and the colour correct on the Luster (2K DPXs). Chris Wallace was the Colourist and did an awesome job. An Arrilaser was used to print it to film. Peter Armstrong manages the DI in Toronto and was fantastic to work with.

Thanks Gregor!

Any specific things you would do over? Time is always the issue with low budget, quick turnaround times. What you envision in your mind doesn't always make it to the screen as you fight through logistics. Looks like you made the best of it, and came away with some good stuff.

Hey, let's get back to the film...

Looks really nice, I can't wait to see this! I think in the current glut of vampire films this will be a really nice addition, I for one haven't seen a 'vampire band' film yet...

The color and general painterly quality to all the frames are very satisfying to look at. I dare say it's some of the nicest looking art direction and coloring I've seen in the (admittedly few) RED-acquired films I've watched.

And somehow they've gotten a clockwork orange-a tized Malcolm in there... is that just the addition of a wig and all of a sudden he looks 19 again??

Great work... I already know the plot generally from reviews in local papers here, but I'd still like to see a proper 'story' trailer.... please alert the forum when it's cut!

Hi Matthew. My work definitely benefited from the outstanding production design, wardrobe, makeup and hair. We shot during a work slow down in Toronto so we managed to get some of the best crew in town.

This is a better link to all things Suck:

The premiere at TIFF was well received on Friday. Hopefully a new and proper trailer by the distributor will be available online soon (the one online right now is more of a sales promo thrown together by the editor).

I should say that there are some shots borrowed from O Lucky Man to help tell Malcolm's back story (definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it).

There's an article on Suck in September's issue of Canadian Cinematographer that fleshes out some more of what we did.
