How many people here with 5Ds are considering selling them to get a 7D? Do you think we will be getting 24p anytime soon for the 5D or is that a pipe dream at this point? Is the jello better on the 7D? The release of the 7d is one of the many reasons why I love Red so much... Red just releases it in a firmware update. Canon makes you buy a whole other camera.

My understanding is 24p will *never* come to the 5D Mark II both for technical and marketing reasons... So... yeah I'd make the move over. That said, I think we'll see more stuff announced oh say tomorrow at IBC.

My bet too. 7D is just the top of the iceberg. Canon is aware of Scarlet. Words from inside.

September 29 seems to be the date for the big announcement (Canon's invitation translated from swedish), though:

«In the autumn, Canon launches one of their biggest and most important products in the company's history and we hope you can attend. You are welcome to listen CEO Jouko Tuominen, Marketing Director Monica Forsberg and trend analyst Magnus Lindkvist.»

I don't understand Canon

They were using 24p mode on Iron Man 2. They can't give us the same?

Maybe RED should wake up and release some good news too...sounds like Canon is awake and ready to do battle...Finally.

Go RED Go...!!! Destroy them.

Now, more than ever, I believe in the right tool for the job.

I have a RED One (two in fact) and I'm getting a Canon 7D which I will use wherever it becomes difficult to use RED (for candid shots mostly).

We should stop this RED vs Everyone else business. I think it's great to have so many options. Thanks RED. Thanks Canon. (I should be at the UN).

The 7D looking cool. Will probably get one, just love shooting stuff spontaneously and have the cam with me where I go. Who knows, suddenly the 5DMKIII shoots raw in film mode.

sure does make jim's offer for a FULL refund of your TWO YEAR OLD Red One with an upgrade seem more generous than it already was. I sure hope his moves like this, entirely for the benefit of the customer are not forgotten as Canon ramps up it's 'RED Killer' rhetoric. I am not saying 'buy RED or else' but such moves should be appreciated by people like us.......

Just try calling Canon and ask them for a FULL refund of your Canon 5D purchase if you upgrade to the 7D.......see what they say.

That's the point I always try and make when this whole RED vs. anyone else comes up. RED is looking out for its customers and trying to give them a camera that they want and can grow with. Where as Canon is just looking to screw their customers over at every chance they get. I don't care what Canon or anyone comes out with because they will never be able to match what RED does for its customers.

I just bought a 5d II and knew 7D was coming (canonrumours)
I made my choice cause I also use it for stills and love the full Format sensor.
And always talking about HD, SD and WEB Im getting great results by converting
To 25 with compressor.

As a REDONE owner/early adopter, I hate to keep defendomg Canon - but it's more about defending the truth. REDONE is/was $20,200 with battery, charger, and LCD (no media) - 5DMKII is $2600, 7d $1700. REDONE has a massive FPGA which makes it easy to do major upgrades but also creates some problems - long bootup, massive power draw, etc. (and a cynic/critic might say it allowed RED to release a prototype camera and develop it along the way - and BTW I was okay with even if that was the case). Out of that $20,200 you get $17500 if you spend at least $10,500 - a fair deal that I will take advantage of, but I suspect RED will still make money on it, AND THAT'S FINE TOO. I want RED to prosper.

The thing about Red is, you can tell that their pushing the engine as hard as they can, and are passing that onto the customer. You gotta respect that.

totally agree and I respect that.

Canon are just ticking over, leaving the customer dangling on a drip feed.
That's cool if you enjoy being a corp bitch.

Don't understand why the dialog has to get to that.

RED has one product that first shipped over two years ago and it appears is still several months from introducing a second.

Canon has about 25 current still and video cameras in their line, with many other lines as well. Since the REDONE first shipped they have put out probably 20 new models - aggressively priced and fully debugged and functional for the market they were intended. Their first DSLR/HDvideo hybrid shipped 9 months ago and within six months they introduced the t1i for $700 -15MP still and 720p video with S35 DOF that is in most respects better than say the HVX200. And within 9 months introduced the 7D at $1700 with 18MP 1080P video that in many respects makes nicer images than an F900 or Varicam. Are there flaws compared to a REDONE? yes but it is a tenth of the price and has advantages too: instant on; 32gig cards for $109; better still imaging; flash capability; more cost effective high quality lenses; autofocus; and probably won't drop in value on the used market more than $500 for at least a year.

No one forces you to buy their interim products. If you bought a 5dMII last January and wait more than two years for your next purchase you will have major improvements in capability and price. You simply need to ignore the fact that they will bring out at least five or six new models above and below that price point in those two years - and then you won't feel bad.

Canon has many levels of customers and on the lower end there are markets where a couple hundred dollars is a big jump. The fact that they put out products for all of those markets and deliver tech improvements in much shorter time periods and smaller increments is just the sign of a large, mature company.

If this offends anyone I'm sorry, I just get tired of the consistent BS sniping. It certainly isn't meant to and shouldn't offend anyone at RED. It's more about REDUSER posters that seem to think you have to bash the other companies - and that RED can't be great unless the others are bad.

Yes, it is:

Less aliasing too. The smaller sensor, the better sampling to 1080p.

That remains to be seen. Nobody to my knowledge has pointed one at a test chart yet, and with that we can measure the aliasing and resolution and see what they did this time.

good point... I look forward to seeing that. who's getting one first?
