  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there any reason to use both REDAlert and REDCine?

Is there any reason to use both REDAlert *and* REDCine? I'm not too familiar with either, but it seems like they both do the same thing - so why are they not just one program?

Also, is there really a need for either program if you are not really interested in transcoding (i.e. if you're using a CS4 workflow which works directly off R3D)?

ABSOLUTELY positively yes.

REDAlert does 1 clip at a time but produces an RSX file which can be used as your Lut for a render cue which is useful threw REDRushes and the sweetest part is REDRushes does multiple clips at a time if you have a multiple processor, multiple ram computer.
Its also a good way to produce your QT proxies if they are missing, and it has useful connections to Clipfiner. REDRushes is awesome ITS FAST and a workhorse.

REDCine once you learn and understand the user interface has a very effective and useful set up.
Both are extremely powerful and versatile in transcoding options.
Without getting too technical your answer is yes.
I used both yesterday all day long on a music video on set.

CS4 wokrflow is very useful and nice, even though you dont have to transcode due to the fact that you can work with the R3D raw you are depending on your computers power to play in real time.
And working from a transcoded file say ProRes422 you make it much easier on your computer in any app to work and play real time even CS4.

My rule of thumb.
If I need the RAW information because it is Critical say for GreenScreen or BlueScreen work and im going to AE I stay natively R3D
If it does not have any keying I transcode to ProRes422HQ with a good 1light color grade in REDRushes or REDCine depending on project.

Good luck

red rushes does not use ram.

Thanks BigLu. REDAlert (with REDRushes) seems pretty useful in that regard. But could you give me one example when you would use REDCine instead of REDAlert/REDRushes?

Is it generally faster to do transcode out of RedCine or using the RedAlert/RedRushes combo?

why? why any of them?
you can color your project in color the same way you could color in red alert of redcine, except you save yourself alot more time and aggravation.
red cine and red alert are dinos now.

I honestly dont get why people grade their offline edit files.. but whatever

Except for the fact that Color doesn't currently support the new color science. So in order to get the benefits of that, some of us still have to work with RA/RC... Now, if we got Color Plugin 3.0, or whatever they're going to call the new version, I'd totally agree with you.

So as of right now, if you do not transcode/CC using either REDAlert or REDCine, you will not be using new color science?

As far as I'm aware, that's correct. There's no way to get the new color science in FCP at the moment, short of rendering out of RA/RC.

I'm guessing that's not going to change soon. At least not until RedCine-X is out, as that seems to be drawing the most development focus.

On projects where we're going to grade the ProRes files, I do a one-light to get the files somewhere close to the final grade. That way I can fix any issues with color temp, exposure, etc. instead of baking them into the QTs.

Flexibility is what is King here.

Much of this is repeat from the guys who have already answered the qustions, but I received a PM and this may help.

Different projects utilize various workflows, that can change the software used very quickly.

Ill explain.

Some Music videos, some commercials, and REPO Chick the movie.
All they want is QT files they can edit with and finish with in FCP / Color.
I hand over transcoded ProRes 422 SD sometimes HQ, QT files 1080p done in REDRushes.
They do not have the time or money to revert back to the R3D.
Results everyone is happy speed, drive space and ease of use was the primary factor.

RedCine is wonderful for doing 1light corrections to all the footage if things are just all over the place.
Also if i want to get stylistic with a music video look. It tends to give a different result from say Color and I LOVE some of the art work you can do in RedCine.
Also I use it for checking all my clips when downloading and backingup.
If it plays in REDCine its good.
ie Spot Checking.

Depending on your computer generally REDRushes is faster because of the multiple processors in use for the transcoding.

why any of them?
Different productions use different workflows. Not everybody uses Color, several of my projects go to Nucoda, DaVinci, Pablo, Scratch, After Effects and so on.
Some edit Avid some FCP some even Premiere.
You do not get the same results in color that you do using REDCine
there seems to be something sweet about REDCine's S curve results that has been cumbersome to achieve the same results in Color.
If a color temperature is off slightly or way off you can also correct for that in REDCine and or REDAlert by the numbers and not work so hard in Color to get back into proper Color temp.
Also I might be off but Color does not have the new color Science of the RED Builds
if im wrong My bad.

I'm a big fan of Clipfinder for multiple clips. . . you can launch REDAlert, and Export from REDrushes right from it. . .

Here's a link. . . it's pretty hardcore, but it's free, and it's awesome. . . so go for it!

Try all the combos out, and see what works for you.

You are totally right, Clipfinder is by far one of my most favorite and used apps in RED workflow shoots.

Totally forgot to mention it.
Only 1 thing i dont like about it is

i didnt write the software
its that good.
