Hi All,

I have a music video shoot coming up at the end of the month..some of the shots are going to be shot in a studio with a white infinity cove.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on camera setup or lighting etc as i haven't shot in this situation before.

thanks

Hey Steve,

Just basic advice here, but if you have control over the situation, you will get the best results by shooting daylight balance (5000k) at ISO320, and shoot with a long lens using an open aperture.

The lens/aperture is obviously to give you a shallow depth of field so you don't see any detail in your white cyc. Nothing worse than seeing a little paint fleck or other flaw in your infinity! You may need some distance between you and your subject for this.

The daylight balance is because that's what the Red sensor is balanced for. Having said that, with the latest build of Red (make sure the camera is running it) it does a very good job with tungsten light as well.

But if you have control and are able, daylight balance will give you the ultimate result.

ISO320 is where the camera is rated. As there is no sensor gain control, anything other than 320 means you are pulling it in post, so for optimal results, stay at 320.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Jim, much appreciated!

I'm hiring from pro kit uk, just waiting to hear back from them on what build they're using.

Jim,

Thanks for a valuable advice here !! I am sure will help many like Steve and ME :)

Lighting.

Use/rent space lights with bibs to illuminate the walls. a 4k every 6' should be fine... this will give you a bright even light without stands.

I usually make a key from a 5k/10k through a silk or diffusion depending on the look you are going for. and size of the room

Yes the sensor is set for 5600 but using build 20 you can use 3200 with no issues of increased noise..

Grabs from a music video I just DOP'd 3200 with no color correction... viewed in RedSpace and crushed the blacks a bit. (No Space lights because we wanted to have white curtains rather than an infinity background.

I guess All I'm saying is, don't be too afraid of 3200 if that's all the lights you have... with build 20 the results are great.

Thanks for that kip,

Another thing i need advice on is shootn for that slo mo smooth look.

As far as i understand you play the music 1.5x faster then slow the footage down in post. would i need to shoot at 50fps to get the best results?

Anyone have any experience in this?

Steve - if you're shooting for a 1.5X speed up you'll be looking at a frame rate of 37 or 38 fps (varispeed) at a base project frame rate 25fps (assuming you're in PAL land). Personally I would aim for a 2X speed up - set the varispeed at 50fps (base project rate always kept to 25fps) - you'll have an easier time syncing in post. Also, at 50fps you'll be able to shoot at 3K which uses much more of the sensor area than 2K. Just remember that shooting in varispeed robs you of light to a certain degree (not heaps but it's noticeable) so factor that in.
If you've got the opportunity - shoot a little test of this before the day. It's fun!

Cheers
