GearNex geared head UPDATE

GearNex Update 10/20/09

GearNex Update 10/20/09

Joseph
Update? ETA? What happening?

As some of you know, we had a problem with the tilt brake in testing and have addressed it. When those modifications where made, the tilt shifter was affected due to the tilt housing being changed to fix the tilt brake.

We also found some deflection in the drive shafts, so we decided to upgrade the shaft quality of metal and in doing so it will also help with corrosion.

If someone would have told me it was going to take this long in April, they would be richer because I would have taken that bet and told them "No Way". We apologize for the delays in making this unit the best it can be but I can assure you, it is very solid and nice.

We have been told the unit should be ready by the second week of September. We like you are hoping it is the last delay. We thank you for your patience.

Hi Joseph:

If it's any consolation, I ordered mine from you at the NAB Red Party knowing it would "be awhile". Heck I just got "another" notice that my Impero will be shipping in 5-10 days and I'm not even counting on that. I've always believed that optimism is the true Mother of Invention. If entrepreneurs had any idea how much time, money, sweat, blood and even tears it would take to get their product, service, website or application to market, no one would ever make anything new. I think I speak for most of us when I say, hey, we completely understand, don't worry about it, just make it great!

Sincerely,

-michael zaletel

Keep on smiling Joseph.
It's understandable, but if Joey, Louie, Bubba or Frankie show
up at your door mid-September, better to have some nice pasta
ready to calm them.
Best wishes in the interim.

I agree entirely. If it wasn't for people like Joseph and Jim Jannard and others who had a good idea and the determination, discipline and courage to follow through, many of us would not have the opportunity today to work with the 'cinema' level equipment that we do. I say good on them for their optimism and wish them the best of success!

Thanks

Thanks

Thank you for the encouragement and kind words. It means a lot when it seems like the whole world is waiting.

Dave, I will be making Pasta just in case.

thanks for quick reply. Unlike other product producer your policy of quick response is sound and right thing to do. Ignoring the inquiry makes the situation worse. Making Black version on Gearnex was excellent decision. Good product does not have to scream their name out. (at least it saved the cost of re-anodizing the part from red to black for me.)

Thanks, and we agree. My 11 year old, Josh, came up with the name Stealth Black and I liked it. So Stealth Black it is.

GearNex case

GearNex case

Here are some pictures of the GearNex heavy duty wheeled hard case with custom foam made by Pelican.

withtray.jpg
It includes a tray that can fit an 18" dovetail plus more. It has nylon straps attached to hard plastic base (Not shown) to prevent tearing of foam when lifting with handles.

The lower section comes with knock outs for the future tilt plate and the three bases. It also has empty holes for misc and the swing tilt arm.

The case retails for $395.

Folks,

I met with Joe Mendoza today and he showed me the progress on the GearNex geared head.

When he pulled the Pelican case from the trunk and opened it up, I said "Wow...that thing is REALLY cool...must be the ultra secret Super Gearnex. Where is the original?"

Then he told me it was the original.

Supremely improved design. They've put thought into EVERYTHING and made it all better. I can't even tell you how much better this product has become since the one that was shown at NAB.

Joe said it looks like shipping will take place in September.

All I can say is the unit I saw looked like it was worth $12,995, and not $5,995. You are all going to be so happy. I was happy before, but this new version has blown me away.

NOt a bad case Joseph, but I much prefer a custom case were each piece of gear is separated by the foam core, and nothing.. Nothing , is free flowing, banging on each other during transport.

So looking forward to get your GEARNEX, wanted one since that day you made me play with one at the RIO, right after you helped me fisting the hungry crowd with Tirami Su
:).

ciao

I am looking forward to some more of your Tirami Su my friend. I can't wait till you get to play with the updated GearNex, if you like that one. This one is much better then our beta unit we had at NAB.

As far as the tray, I was debating on sectioning it out and after your comment, I may just do that. Thanks for the input.

NOt sure if you knew, but I'll be possibly reopening the studio here in Vegas, in the advent of few large projects, so if you ever come this way, shout out and you'll have your Tirame Su' :).

The first lens I'll be putting on the Gearnex will be the 18-85, made for each other, I got to play with the Arri/Head, great and smooth, but way too big for the R1 and the new to come Scarlet/Epic, but most important way too costly, hehe, what a great idea you had Joseph, I really don't like Fluid heads at all!!

ciao

Plus one on both the last two posts.

I'm pretty sure I was still shoveling Ketch's generous goodness into my mouth while waiting for a turn at the Gearnex. It was the coolest thing at the party with the possible exception of the RPP's, choosing between those two is a pretty tough call. (oh, yeah and some those other things just down the hall a piece) :-)

It would be great to have the top sectioned, and the gear you have in the top in the pic is a good guide. I'd bet most of us own one of the ET dovetails, ET / RED-ET bridge plates, EVF mount spare rods etc.

Can't wait to get my hands on mine, but take all the time you need to get it right.

And I'll say it out loud as I own a Birger.

I don't mind at all that it's taking more time, because Joseph has done a super job of keeping us informed, and I always, ALWAYS get an email response in short order when I've sent mail to Gearnex, once I got a ten minute turn around after midnight on a Sunday.

Other folks could learn a lot about customer service from these folks.

Steve

What size of Pelican case is that?

I believe it is the 1620 with heavy duty recycled custom fit foam. After hearing Ketch's comment, I am thinking we might just send it out with the tray and as the options are finished, we send out a custom fit blank for the tray. That way we don't hold up shipping for the accessories.

Joseph:
Everyone is excited about your great gear head and seems to me no
one is concerned about ETA on tilt plate. Minute you start to ship Gearnex everyone will start to howl about TILT PLATE. Everyone 's thinking as if Gearnex is like fluidhead. People don't realize how often you have to tilt your camera beyond 30 odd degree tilt Gearnex is enabled.
I shoot lot of table top and camera pointing down straight. Without tilt plate
Gearnex will be very awkward piece of gear to use almost to the point of retarded. Your partner DOP's background must be drama shooting not so much TV commercial.
Selling tilt plate as accessary is a mistake. It's like selling a car without reverse gear. It should not be an option. Of course you should charge more.
You don't have to make dual direction tilt plate like Arri gear head (which is built into head to start with) which should save cost and development time.
Simple wedge shaped solid dove tail might be a solution.(although it is not so elegant but sure makes me feel safe to put camera on it)
Bottom line ETA on TILT PLATE?
