If scarlet was released today?? Put my order in and not have to wait long to receive it, hopefully....

Perhaps - I've used an older 17 inch model, and it was very cool (but quite heavy!). The main reasons I wasn't thinking about the 17 inch is that it's not very portable (not a massive problem, as I have a little MacBook that I use for Uni) and it's a bit pricey here (about $600 more than in the US)... And you don't get the iPod in Australia...

Bummer. I was looking at the AU Apple store and everything is a lot more pricier there. :eek6:

Well, remember that you guys usually have to add on sales tax (7% or something?) and then there's the exchange rate. But yeah, it does end up being around $400 - 600 more expensive for the computers...

I would love to say that I would buy one right away. I saved up for a July release of S35, but have moved most of the funds to other equipment. I'm back to saving, but it will take more than a few more months.

The equipment was 5dmkII, 50D and several L series Lenses. 3 used Sony 1/2" chip block cameras for webcasts as well.

Back to saving....

I want my ScarletFF35 Jim do you hear me? I will do terrible things to my teddy-bear if you don't release it immediatly. I want it, I need it!!!
:emote_head_explode:

If the Scarlet were released tomorrow, and the cost to get your Scarlets under normal working conditions were:

$4,500 2/3 Fixed
$4,500 2/3 Interchangeable
$9,000 S35
$11,750 FF35

...what would you do?

I would keep shooting with my 5D in hopes that one day RED will get their stuff together.

That thing keeps going up in price and it's not even out yet

No, that's not the price of the brain. Again, people forget that you can't just shoot with a Scarlet brain...you have to have some other modular components added (such as a battery, monitor and/or EVF, recording media, audio breakout box, rails to make it more ergonomical, lenses).

The price of the 2/3" Interchangeable BRAIN ONLY has not changed in price, but that won't be the cost to shoot with it.

What I was talking about was the Scarlet 2/3" Fixed Lens camera that's ready to roll. When I first started looking into it, it was $3,500... then it jumped to $3,700... then $4,000... now $4,500... I know these are just rumors, but it's gets discouraging after awhile.

I guess part of that could be considered as inflation over the 2-3 year period of building the camera.

Still, does anybody realize how much of a steal we are looking at getting these cameras for? What's the best Sony or Panasonic is currently giving for this price point?

so when were the dates actually removed from the red website?
must have been recent (sorry if already been discussed)

yeah now that Fall is about to be upon us they probably decided it was a good idea to remove them

Wow! They did remove the dates...hmm. I wonder if that is good or bad...

good. If the cameras aren't ready, it would be a failure to have a premature release. Keeping the Fall dates up when Jim isn't sure how the tests will go just gets people to believe it is time for the release...when of course it isn't.

Good change the dates and get this line of cameras bugless, I am actually quite relieved about that.

Off topic some what but was wondering if others share this opinion. The fixed 2/3' Scarlet should be a good contender in the HVX202/XDCAMEX1/3 market if not blow them out of the water. By offering all the convenience of a run and gun doco with delivery options ranging from web to theater.
By that I mean:
Fully auto function including; focus, iris, gain, white balance and audio levels.
With indoor/outdoor presets as well as manual settings for when time permits.

Basically all the standard functions of most hand held small HD cameras but with RED's KICK ASS!!! 2/3' chip and Redcode. There is a huge market for these cameras waiting to be opened up to high res i.e more than HD. Not to mention offered as B cameras on bigger and better funded shoots if need be.

I would love to add a Scarlet to the arsenal. There are times when R1 is just too heavy for certain shooting situations. Pulling out a Scarlet for those shots would be incredible.

My advice to anyone who is planning on buying a Scarlet, especially if this is the first professional camera you will purchase: Make sure to have some contingency funds. That way if you need more media or accessories that go beyond the ones included in the package, you'll be prepared. Or, make sure you have a rental company nearby that will have full support for RED gear.

I say this not to scare anyone, I'm just speaking from experience. I ended up getting some essential accessories for R1 that were not in the original budget, but they made a huge difference in the functionality of my camera package. I'm sure Scarlet will be ready to roll straight out of the box, but you'll have to assess your needs for how much additional storage and support gear you'll need for the type of shooting you do. I highly suggest that everyone make a list of what you'll need for gear in addition to the camera package. That includes matteboxes, lenses (if not fixed lens version), filters, batteries, monitors, computers that are powerful enough to support RAW workflow, tripods, lighting, sound equipment, etc. List out what you'll need to buy, what you can easily rent, and perhaps stuff that will end up on a wishlist. Factor in the current pricing structure for Scarlet as it stands now. Put all of those numbers together, add 10-20% and come up with a number that allows you to have a practical goal of money you need to save or borrow. Then from there, you may want to even compile a small business plan and strategy for recouping the money as quickly as possible, unless of course this is just for hobby or you are independently wealthy, which means you don't have to worry about any of what I've said in this post :-)

Although Scarlet will be at a price point lower than R1, in some configurations, much lower, I'd still advise smart planning and thinking of ROI. I don't necessarily like the business side of all this, I much prefer the creative/technical side but it's one of those things you have to deal with.

The main problem with S35 and FF35 Scarlets is lack of overcranking. There is zero chance I will ever buy a movie camera that cannot overcrank. Therefore, the only choices for me are Epic and 2/3 Scarlet.

It would be a serious mistake, IMO, to release Scarlet S35 and FF35s without overcranking.
