  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

18-85 mattebox + filters

Yes, I have shot with the 18-85mm, MB20 with two 4x5.65 stages. It covers. The 138mm bellows does not and must be removed.
 
RedRock Mattebox also fits as they have tweaked the rear bellows ring to work. 4x5.65 filters just cover. If you want more than 2 stages or need anything that rotates, you'll want 5.65x5.65 filters.
 
Both the MB20-II and the MMB-1 can fit the RED 18-85. For the MB20-II, the rear bellows is removed and the rear cowling slips perfectly over the lens. The MB20-II is available in 3-tage and with 4x5.65 filters it will cover all three as long you do not rotate. If you wish to rotate than I would suggest buying the appropriate filters in 5.65x5.65. The limitation is a function of the size of the filter, not the mattebox holding it.

The MMB-1 is available with an accessory back that is 143mm, same as the MB20-II. With this back the MMB-1 can atually be used as a clamp-on mattebox for the 18-85. That is a clamp-on with two 4x5.65 filter stages, one rotating. Not bad.
 
Just wondering, if RedRock Mattebox fits the 18-85 then would it fit the primes?

Clarification: ARRI has not yet produced the 143mm back for the MMB-1. This does not mean that they won't ever make it, only that they have not yet done so. If enough of you post publicly that you want one, perhaps we can persuade them to speed up the process. ;-)
 
So Mitch, the the MB20 II should be the best solution for the 18-85 and RPP, at list for 4x5's correct?

What if the use of Polarized rotating filters, would I still be able to use the MB20 II for it, or it does not hold the larger filter required to cover the 18-85 when rotating the filter?

The MB20-II is indeed the best mattebox for the 18-85. You might say that one was made for the the other.;-)

Rotating pola filters can be used without issue, but you will need a 5.65x5.65 filter so that it does not ever block the frame. The MB20-II is available in 2-stage or three-stage versions, and even in 3-stage one can rotate all three filters without ever blocking the frame even with the lens at 18mm.
