  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi!

How will REDROCKET work with the future full-frame EPICs and SCARLETs? Will it be a different version of REDROCKET able to handle 6K? Or will this version work with the new line of cameras as well?

Thanks!
George

I'm just speaking out of my ass here but I'd imagine a simple firmware upgrade to debayer different redcode I wouldn't imagine you could expect the same performance at a higher redcode you may need to buy two and run dual process (not taking pci limitation into consideration here).not really sure I guess with the scalability of the the redcode vs the scalability of price point relative cards may also be an option not sure if this would be practical from a production stand-point initially , who knows maybe the cards could be modular

Not sure about 6K, but Jim confirmed 5K on another thread.

my guess is yes, it will work with 6K 9K and even 28K.

You've also got to remember that beside the resolution increase, the 6K sensors can shoot at 16bit instead of 12bit, which increases the amount of data to process by 33%.

4K 24p at 16bit should process at slightly less than real time. 6K speeds should process at a little greater than half the speed of 4K.

Can someone from RED provide an answer?

That would be great.

Thanks!

Either way Red Rocket would make 6K, 9K, 28K faster than without.

I wonder if red will create an external box we can put multiple cards into and use as a render farm. PCIe 3.0 is coming

That would be awesome. This would be killer for laptop use and mobility.

Still no answer from RED... Is it possible for someone from there to comment on this question?

Thanks!

I too would be interested, just to be sure it'll help us when we upgrade our R1s. We're a small shop, and the $5K investment is important for us to be spread out over the R1 and future Scarlet and Epic work.

Red will answer when they know, and know for sure. Until then, no point pushing.

Exactly.

The future 6K Monstro and larger sensors are still quite a ways off into the future. These were originally targeted for the END of next year at the earliest and you know, things change, there's been delays, economic slowdown...

RED Rocket is an interesting tool. It shows lots of promise, but at this moment it's uses are limited. For anyone who does a significant amount of transcoding, the Rocket can be a great investment as it allows one system to do the same amount of work that would take several systems to do via REDLINE and a network render management software.

I think it's still too early to tell just how much the Rocket will contribute to typical editing operations.

I think it's also safe to assume that the RED Rocket will provide some degree of acceleration to upcoming larger REDCODE formats; 6K~28K. But to what degree is uncertain and it's likely that RED doesn't even have these numbers at this time. By the time those cameras are out in the wild, CPUs will be twice as fast and there will be twice as many of them in a workstation. Only RED knows what, if anything, is currently planned for the evolution of the RED Rocket.
