  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

i didnt find a thread about this topic but,how does the field of view from an anamorphic compare to an spherical lens?

especialy when shoting with the red one.

On 4-perf 35mm film, regular 2x anamorphic lenses will get you about twice the field of view for an equivalent spherical focal length- so a 35mm anamorphic lens would be about as wide as a ~18mm spherical lens. Because the Red one sensor isnt as large (namely tall) as a 4-perf film negative, your going to only get about a difference of 1.5x wider or so (as the Red crops out a section of the center of the image for anamorphic recording), so a 35mm anamorphic will only be about as wide as a 24mm spherical lens in that case. BTW- I havent actually measured it exactly on the Red but I think 1.5x is somewhere in the ballpark.

I posted today in another forum something related to -- with useful links too, I hope:

Even though concerning other camera device but also anamorphics (full frame and 1.5x vs. S35 and 2x @ RED ONE), it applies to any acquisition environment, so hope it helps.

thank you so much! that helps a lot

So... that would make it actually similar to FF35. Yeah? That means, for those of us from a stills background, a 50mm on FF35 is roughly equivalent to 75mm (x1.5) on a sensor like the R1 but, if it's a 2x anamorphic, given the smaller vertical size of the R1 sensor (meaning you're cropping the edges unless you want a 4:1 aspect), that 50mm is back to giving a similar (horizontal) FoV as a 50mm would on FF35(?) Hmmm. Sounds suspiciously easy for me. There's got to be a catch.:confused5:

The only catch is that you end up with a 2.40 aspect ratio with anamorphic... and it's not a spherical lens.
