  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quick question...

Same shot on Scarlet S35 vs Epic S35 with exactly the same lenses/light/settings, will it produce the same size R3D file?

I understand that the Scarlet S35 encodes at REDCODE 80 vs 225/250 for the Epic but I also remember reading somewhere that if you shoot at 120fps 2K on the Red One or 30fps 2K on the Red One each individual frame will have the same amount of compression therefore this implies most of the time the Epic will not be using its full 225/250 potential throughput so a 5K frame at 30fps should be compressed the same for both Epic and Scarlet.

If this is true then people who are buying the camera (not renting) should just buy the Scarlet and hire an Epic when the fps are needed... (Assuming rental houses are going to rent out Epic bodies only)

Make sense?

Actually the new REDCODE numbers are supposedly not representative of MB/s. We have been told it's more a representation of image quality and that it would make sense once everything is revealed.

Given that both the Scarlet S35 and EPIC S35 use the same 5K Mysterium-X sensor, the RAW data should start out the same. However, EPIC being the more powerful camera could potentially record at higher data rates or with a more demanding compression algorithm to give better image quality -- theoretically.

But all things considered, you know what I know what we know... Only RED knows for sure.

And they're probably about to change it...

Especially since the world of Red is in a constant state of flux. They're like the illusionists of the camera world, it's all about misdirection until they hit you with the real deal and leave you standing there clapping in shock and awe.
