as I noticed and I hope I'm not very wrong on this, that RED is made up of a small team working on many things together to get you cameras, lenses, software.. more and more.. well, and a specualation about RED's future is that they are going to eat the whole market of motion and still tools and equipment..
at this point other companies with big teams (canon, sony. ... etc)will either race up with red and start using their big teams to provide better solutions to keep up the market racing (like providing 4K+ raw solutions from aquisition to the end of the workflow).. or they will start a war on red either in cold way or in the form of apple suing microsoft saying they are monopoling the market,,

I've just read that RED have registered a new trademark of a RED operating system... imagine that if this system exist people will love it and will be the standard OS for doing any image related work from still photography to high end cine productions.. everyone will have it as the standard professional machine that is ultra optimized for the tasks that we (Image Professionals) would like to use.. and getting rid of all other defective/feature missing OSs like MACOSX and Windows...

its just a thought..

I really doubt that they're actually going to follow through with most of these trademarks - it's more about just protecting the RED trademark. Actually writing an operating system from scratch would take a workforce of software developers numbering something in the high hundreds at least, or at least 40 to 80 if they based it on Linux or on something like BSD or Mach like Apple did...

as it was said back when Red was 1st announced ... think beyond the box !!
a operating system could be something that operates a camera, phone, dvd type device, viewing device etc. ??

Perhaps, but remember that even Google Android uses the Linux kernel that weighs around 6.5 million lines of code. XNU/Mach (which Mac OS X on the desktop and on the iPhone is based on) would have something similar. Then there's the C library, and all the other libraries and so on you need... Ohloh estimates that the 45 million lines of code that Debian Linux ships would take about 15, 249 person years to write at a cost of $880, 000, 000 using average salaried developers...

Even if RED did what Apple did and heavily based it on open source software, they would still need to hire a small army of developers to do it...

The Army doesn't have to be wearing RED T-Shirts.. RED is a small team anyway and I think they may remain like this for quite good time.. but, imagine the company that creates the sensor's for camera maker .. AltaSense fot silicon imaging and p+s technik in the SI-2K (don't know which one makes it for RED).. or other electronic chips from different makers.. you always can get custom made chips easily when you buy 1000+ pcs..
imagine REDHAT creating RED Linux the new OS for visual artists.. etc.. in collaboration with N, S, and other companies.. etc..

So what software would you imagine running on this new OS? A lot of us spend a lot of time in software that runs either on Windows or OSX.

But if there was something like a Red OS, who says it´s not just the camera firmware?

Seems to me the big companies are exactly that, BIG lathargic and thus cant move that nimbly. Besides that, seems the big companies have a bigger problem and thats un-branding themselves to compete. My point is ARRI, Canon,Sony all have a brand that has been well established and by this been able to price there equipment accordingly...ie 200,000 + for bodies alone, ok that said, the prices trickle down thru prosumer then consumer and there inlies the real dilema how do you make a 4k, 5k or more camera that has a pricepoint to compete with the nimble RED company and then not have to actually give away prosumer and consumer cameras? make any sense?

Beyond that RED isnt a new kid on the block situation. In case we care to remember its staffed with people that grew a giant named Oakley, and perhaps learned there that big doesnt mean better.

Microsoft, the OSS community and Apple spend a LOT of time trying to optimize their software to run FAST.

You would spend 10 years working on the OS only to deliver a few % improvement in performance.

The OS is NOT holding back RED's processing power.
