Could the replacement for Shake be announced this week?

Post your SIGGRAPH experiences/observations here.

I don't blame you. However when you consider the fact that Apple lost the lead engineer on Shake it isn't so unreasonable to think that it might take a few years to get that ball rolling again. The notion that Apple has abandoned their pro apps seems ludicrous to me. Now you might point out that as a company, Apple has a history of that sort of thing, but under Jobs I would say not so much.

Also, January is typically the time for the biggest Mac news anyway. With much of the Epic/Scarlet rollout now pushed to the end of the year Jan. might have bigger impact.

AAAAAA Hahahahahah... hu

Sorry, not meant at you; really meant at Apple.

Just frustrated knowing that this would never happen.
Although I would like nothing less... but having worked, sold, integrated
Apple products (as the special Pro Apple aproved VAR blah blah blah) I gave up
believing that they would come up with anything really revolutionary on
that front. I don't even have the enegry to honestly say; "I hope I'm wrong."

Sorry, bad day.

nuke IS the replacement for shake

In some sense I am certain that you are right. At $3500 per seat plus maintenance contract, Nuke is a replacement for Shake. There is nothing else like it at at $500 per seat, and I expect there will be an increasing demand as cameras like Scarlet take their places in the marketplace. I guess After Effects will fill that spot, particularly now that Adobe has dropped the Premium product tier.

Funny thing is, I bought Shake from Apple when they generously slashed the price to $4000!!! Actually, that's not really true. They dropped it from $4500 to $4000 and it still took me a few months to buy it, and then they slashed the price to $1999 like 17 days after I bought it. Just a day or two longer than it took for their 15-day price guaranty and return window to expire. Har... The point is, they had already discontinued further development on Shake at that point. AFter that, the price just kept falling as it was an EOL product. They dropped the price to $499 and released the final update to it about 2 years ago or something like that.

I think it will be a while before we see an actual replacement of a node-based compositor in the $500 price range. For compositing work on a budget, After Effects is pretty much it. Eyeon used to offer DFX+, which was a version of Fusion that was crippled to lower resolutions and couldn't accept a lot of the extra modules that full-blown Fusion could. It was a great offering, but it seems they discontinued the DFX software product. Too bad. It was the closest thing to a still-supported compositing app for under $1K at the time.

Nuke is where it's at now, IMO. If you have real need for a compositing app, you can't go wrong with Nuke and it should pay for itself rather quickly if you're actually using it for real jobs.
